The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

Situated at the foothills of one of Bulgaria's most beautiful mountains, Bansko is a charming, historic town which enjoys the stunning alpine backdrop formed by the Pirin Mountain range. A climatic mountain resort, Bansko is an alpine skiing, hiking and climbing centre. The natural beauty of the region provides the perfect environment in which to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities all year round, an ideal destination for both winter and summer activity holidays.
The alpine character of the mountains create excellent skiing conditions for all levels of ability and experts can enjoy some of the country's best downhill skiing at the nearby resort of Shiligarnika. The resort has only recently been discovered by foreign skiers and tourists who enjoy state of the art ski lifts and a well planned ski area. Snow is guaranteed from December until May.
South of Bansko is the Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its lakes, waterfalls, caves, century old trees and historical sites.

Bansko / Todora Towers area

The Bansko ski area is particularly well suited to beginners and intermediates, although the slopes also give access to some good off-piste skiing and snowboarding.
Snow conditions in Bansko are good and lift queues are rare, even during peak season. A multi million Euro project has resulted in the installation of new lifts, including an 8 person gondola, snow guns, and electronic pass system. Skiers will find easy access to the 14 pistes, over 65km with five 4 seat lifts, one 3 seat lift, 6 drags and 10 baby drags. There is a unique 16km uninterrupted ski run, starting at Todorka Peak (2600m above sea level) at the highest point of the ski centre, all the way to the base station of the Gondola Lift Station on the outskirts of the town. Bansko is popular with snowboarders who can enjoy the popular halfpipe. There is a top class ski school which caters for all levels of ability.

During the summer months visitors can enjoy mountain biking, hiking, fishing, horseriding, exploring the Pirin National Park, and relaxing in any of the nearby Spa's. The National Park encompasses rugged alpine peaks that rise above 8,202ft (2,500m) and more than a hundred glacial lakes. The magnificent landscape combines old forests, waterfalls, caves and areas of limestone that are home to the near extinct edelweiss and the Pirin poppy. Characteristic to the park is the abundance of rare and endemic species of plants and animals, with a wide variety of flora and fauna. Alpine mountaineering and skiing are popular, and together with the cultural heritage of the surrounding mountain settlements and stunning scenery, Pirin National Park is an attractive tourist destination.
There is the planned Ian Wosenam designed 18 hole golf course due for completion in 2008.
Bansko probably offers the best Apres-ski because its a unique combination of a modern mountain resort and a living rustic town with a population of about 10,000. There are almost 100 local taverna's to eat at and at the end of a days skiing you can enjoy a drink/meal at the Happy End restaurant by the Gondala lift which turns into a lively night club later on. There are a number of other clubs and bars to soak up the Apres ski atmosphere in this otherwise quaint village.
