The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
Bansko is situated in South-Western Bulgaria at the foot hills of the spectacular Pirin mountains. The outskirts of Pirin National Park, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, can be reached within a 15 minute walk from my apartment. The Park covers nearly 30,000 hectares and is famous for it's lakes, waterfalls, caves and historical sites. A short walk from my flat takes you to the beginning of beautiful mountain trails lasting from an average of 2.5 hours to the more adventurous 9 hours.
Bansko area
Bansko is a tremendously atmospheric 10th century Bulgarian mountain town with an indigenous population of 10,000. The main Pirin street, every 2nd or 3rd building of which is a charming timber framed stone house, leads to grand squares featuring historical sculptures and the impressive Holy Trinity Church, with a 30m high bell tower clock, spendid murals and ornate wood carvings.
Bansko is also the newest and fastest growing ski resort in Bulgaria. 40 million euros have been invested to build a new gondola ski lift, snow machines and an electronic ski pass system. There are 14 pistes following 65 km, including a 16km run.
The Bansko ski area is particularly well suited to beginners and intermediaries and Ulen Ski and Snowboard School and Ulen Junior Ski Club offer excellent tuition at a fraction of the price you would pay at an Alpine ski resort. More advanced skiers can enjoy some of Bulgaria's best downhill skiing at the nearby resort of Shiligarnika.
But Bansko is a year round resort. In the Summer tourists can enjoy horse riding, hiking, mountain biking, paintballing, extreme adventures (off road jeep safari, rock climbing, white water rafting etc), excursions to Bulgaria's famous Rila Monastery and a trip on the country's oldest mountain railway. Bansko also hosts annual traditional jazz and Bulgarian folk music festivals and numerous other cultural events.

By Air - The nearest airport is Sofia.

By car -
An average car journey from Sofia to Bansko takes about 2.5 hours. Car hire including unlimited miles and full insurance costs from £14 per day. Car hire websites include www.rentacar.need.bg/en, www.rentmobile.com, www.bulgariacarrent.com and www.rentacarbulgaria.com.
Transfers/Bus Transfers from Sofia can be arranged for £50 each way for a spacious 4 seater car (contact the owner for details). There is a regular public bus service operating several times a day from the Central Bus Terminal at Ocvha Kupel for just £3 one way.
