The village is best known as a starting point to discover the delights of walking or climbing Snowdonia.The slopes of Bethesda bear the gouges created by the largest opencast slate quarry in the world, Penrhyn Quarry, from here the slate was transported a short distance to the sea at Port Penrhyn in Bangor.
