The Koh Samui region
Koh Samui - The Gulf of Thailand
The earliest recorded history of Samui goes 15 centuries back when the island was made home by fishermen from the Malay Peninsula and Southern China. Until late 20th century, Koh Samui remained isolated from Thailand mainland and the world, with a self-sufficient community. 1970s brought the hippy crowd to the island, changing its facet forever. Until then, the island's economy was based around subsistence agriculture and fishing, with coconut its main cash crop. For a decade or so, the island continued to be a backpacker destination with some rustic beachside bungalows and a few travelers.
The trickle turned torrential in 1990s with boatloads of tourists arriving from mainland to admire its virgin beaches and forests. Since then, its growth has been exponential. Now, Samui is the second most popular tourist destination in Thailand. Its pristine sand beaches, exotic coral reefs, lovely lagoons, breathtaking waterfalls, crystal clear water, abundant marine life and swaying palms lure tourists to this tropical haven.
Unfortunately, the heavy influx of tourists has taken its toll on the island's main beaches of Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut. However, there are still pockets of unspoiled nature left for those who are willing to take the extra effort.
Bang Po Beach
The palm-fringed white sands of Bang Por Beach lie on a quiet stretch of the northern coast of Koh Samui, facing towards the neighbouring island of Koh Phangan. The beach itself stretches some 4km between Ban Tai in the east and Bang Por in the west, with beach restaurants an easy stroll along the shore.
The calm shallow waters in this part of the Gulf of Thailand offer excellent snorkelling opportunities with shallow coral reefs and many colourful fish within easy reach of the shore.
Quiet and lacking the mass-tourism development found in other areas of the island, there is no noisy nightlife in the immediate vicinity to disturb the tranquillity, and only small neighbourhood shopping outlets.
On an island of this size however, nothing is ever very far away. Just a 5 minute stroll down the beach you will find yourself at Jun Hom beach restaurant offering excellent Thai cuisine. Nightlife in the old fisherman's village of Bophut is a mere 10 minute drive, and the main tourist centre of Chawaeng just 20 minutes away.
