The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Var region
In winter we have enjoyed blue skies and sun so that sitting outside in a coat for coffee is very agreeable. Usually rain is heavy but of short duration. In the summer there can be a mistral wind, which keeps the temperature very pleasant.
The area behind the coast is very high and rugged and includes Cezanne's Mount st Victoire. between them and the sea is farmland, mostly vines and olive trees, interspersed with outcrops of rocks on which villages are perched.
The coast road from the Aigle cape to the Sicié cape has some magnificent views and breathtaking climbs.
It is an area loved by artists and writers. Katherine Mansfield and Sybille Bedford both lived there at one time.
We have visited Aix (1 hour) Avignon and the Pont de Gard ( 2 hours); Nice and St Paul de Vence, wonderful art museums ( 2 hours) Cotignac and the Gorges de Verdon and the Carmague are ( 2 hours).
The Bandol area
Bandol was a small fishing village. It has grown but retains much of its character. In the town there are some lovely sandy beaches. There is an 18th century church at the end of the leafy square. There is the Centre Culturel which has interesting exhibitions. In season there is a nightly market on the harbour promenade. Out of season dancing inthe square. There is the Exotic Gardens and zoo with tropical plants, trees in flower and animals from all over the world.
Immediately inland one can visit the fifty wine estates to taste and buy the excellent Bandol wines. The wine centre opposite the Casino can help you select which ones you want to visit or take pot luck. You can also visit the olive oil mill.
The immediate surrounding area
The Isle of Bendor (7 mn boat ride): its beach, marina, and Provençal village with crafts shops. The Wine and Spirits World Fair: 8,000 bottles are presented here as well as a beautiful collection of crystal carafes and glasses.
The Isle of Embiez: (15 mns boat ride) has the Paul Ricard Oceanographic Institute, an aquarium-museum boasting a hundred or so species and the "Musée de la Peinture Paul Ricard".
Other seaside villages Sanary-sur-mer (6 km): seaside resort, another true Provençal seaside village. We like Les Leques, (8km) which has a water park Six Fours les Plages 10 km away (Fort offering a panoramic view over the Toulon harbour. . Both Toulon and Marseille are interesting but very different cities. There is very good walking in the foret
Inland there are many Provençal villages to visit: Le Beausset 11 km away (Chapelle Notre Dame de Beausset, panorama of the coast and its villages), La Cadiere steep and shady hill top village with a wine co-operative at its base. Le Castellet 11 km away (medieval village overlooking the vineyards full of artists). The children enjoy OK Corall.
The Bandol area
Walking Along the coastal path, (le Littoral) There is the foret de Janas (29 mins by car) and forest at Madrague(10mins by car)
Water sports : Bandol Water sports Club (in Town)
Diving : “Bandol Plongée”
Golf : "Dolce Frégate" (9 and 18 holes) in St-Cyr-sur-Mer (5 km).
Horse-riding : "La Poulinière" in Beausset (11 km) and the "Centre Equestre de Ollioules" (11 km).
Paragliding and paramotoring : "Envol de Provence" in Signes 30 km away.
Cycling. many people cycle. It looks a real challenge and I prefer an english bike as the breaks are reversed.
Resort Fêtes and events
- June : The Sea Flea market (sale and exchange of nautical equipment) and various regatta.
- July : Saint Elme’s Festival.
- August : The Frégate Festival (comedy evening, theatre, jazz…), “La Libération de Bandol” (military procession, dance, fire work display…) and the Garlic Fair (profits go towards the league against cancer)

Ryanair and Easyjet go to Marseille and Toulon(summer) so does Air france but they are expensive. We have hired from Europcar successfully. There is a Navette to both towns from where one can catch the train. Last train (22:45). The Varlibre coach from Toulon is good.
It takes 10 hours driving time on the road from the channel ports. Stops are essential and we often stay somewhere overnight. Campanile let one cancel up to 18:00. The tolls are abou 80 Euros each way.
