The County Galway / County Clare / County Galway region

North-west of Banagher, on the Connaught side of the river is the site of the monastic establishment of Clonfert, with the more famous Clonmacnoise a short distance further north. Clonmacnoise, an early Christian site founded in the mid-6th century includes the ruins of a cathedral, seven churches, two round towers, three high crosses and the largest collection of Early Christian graveslabs in Western Europe.

Birr Castle, home to Lord and Lady Rosse and their family, is also home to Ireland's Historic Science Centre, The Great Telescope and demesne. Cloghan Castle is located between Gort and Loughrea, just outside the village of Kilchreest in Co. Galway.

The Slieve Bloom mountains is made up of forests, blanket bogs that are unique to Ireland, interspersed with hidden valleys of great character, and interest to the nature lovers.

The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board offers extensive game, coarse, pike and sea angling guides, describing the hundreds of fisheries located in the region.

The Banagher area

Banagher is a scenic and charming Shannon-side village with an impressive history. As one of the few crossing points on the Shannon between the provinces of Leinster and Connaught, the village of Banagher held an important military strategic position. Any army that wanted to cross the river had few choices: Banagher, Athlone, Shannonbridge or Portumna. As a result numerous castles, forts and Martello towers dot the surrounding landscape.

Corrigans “The Corner House” Public House, located in the centre of the town, is a traditional Irish family-run pub. Flynns Bar & Lounge is a family-run pub serving food and drink and also has live music at weekends.

Birr Golf Club (18 hole golf course, Par 70) and Esker Hills Golf Club are both nearby. The River Queen, a fully licensed fifty-four seat cruiser which sails the river Shannon on a one and a half hour cruise, sails daily from Shannonbridge.

“Don't hesitate - you won't be disappointed! Fantastic accomodation...” I stayed at Riverside for a hen party and can honestly say it just made the weekend having such a beautiful house to stay in. We gathered around the cosy log fire each night enjoying a good natter with some drinks and food. Peter was most accomodating in helping us to arrange taxis into town and for Adam the chef to come to the house on one night to cook for us.... A-MAZ-ing! Adam cooked up a storm and we can honestly say you wouldn't have got better out in a restaurant. The house itself is warm, spacious and literally has everything you'd need.... I even brought my dogs!! They had a secure sheltered kennel to stay in, and massive garden to run around. Banagher itself is a beautiful little place and the people are warm, inviting and incredibly friendly.... Whatever the occasion.... it's a must to experience what Riverside has to offer.

“Riverside Paradise is exactly what it sounds like” Riverside Paradise is clean, spacious, well finished, comfortable and has a real home feel about it. We were a group of 14 girls who never once felt crowded over the weekend. From the moment we arrived everything was laid on for us, having access to massages and a chef in the house was fantastic. “Some Yanks in Ireland” I traveled to Riverside Paradise with my wife, my parents, my sister, my in-laws and my brother-in-law. As you can imagine it was a big group and Riverside Paradise was up to the challenge. It was spacious and clean and a truly beautiful setting. It was our home base for our stay in Ireland and the location was great. Also, the town of Banagher is a great town with everything you would need for a good vacation. I would recommend Riverside Paradise to anyone.

“AMAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZING” We stayed at Riverside Paradise for my sisters hen party in Oct. We had such a brilliant time there. 12 girls stayed in the house and there was so much room for us all. The house and its garden is simple fantastic. Peter was extremely helpful and made everything so easy for us. i would highly recommend Riverside Paradise a place to go for anyone. We will def be coming back again( thinking of having a reunion in the house every year from now on) ;o) Thanks again Peter for your warm welcome, Riverside Paradise is sincerely a credit to you

“Cosy, comfortable, breath taking - a riverside paradise” First impressions were of a large yet cosy, and immaculately clean house. During the course of our four day stay, this impression was not changed, but augmented. Everything imaginable was catered for - extra towels, spices & condiments, shower gels & shampoos, firewood, not to mention entertainment items such as board games, DVD's and CD's. All these additions served to heighten the sense of comfort in the place - it felt lived in, rather than a cold, rental property. The location was perfect for any number of activities, including river cruises, which we took part in. The grounds and views were only breath taking. We had lots of wind and rain during our stay, with a short spell of calm, and it was a great source of enjoyment for us to look out on the river and watch it change according to the elements. The grounds, in turn, provided hours of fun for us in Hide and Seek! In a nutshell, we had a cosy, comfortable stay, with each day bringing new bouts of astonishment at the thoughtful additions of the owners.

“Excellent Holiday Retreat” We had a fantastic time when we rented out Riverside house. It was an accidental find on the web but what a treasure. Plenty of room for the extended family, plenty of space for the kids to play, very well equipped and fantastic views and outdoor space. The service was great would highly recommend it to anyone have already told friends about it who have booked their own trip. We had a local chef come in and cook for us on our last night organised by the owner's lovely food and a great character. A truly great find!!

“Fantastic location, Golf, Fishing and friendly locals - a great combination.” After seeing Riverside Paradise advertised in the media, 8 friends and myself booked a week in this wonderful house with a great location. The house, over 3 levels was extremely modern, spotless and perfect for us. After meeting Peter and his daughter, both extremely helpful, we viewed the house and location and were blown away. The very private jetty which allowed fishing in the Shannon river was the icing on the cake. Banagher town is 5 minutes down the road and we had driving access to some wonderful golf courses. We had a wonderful time and my friends and family commented on how relaxed I looked when i got home. I would recommend this house to groups or families - it has everything. Peter even organised a chef to come in and cook for us 1 night - fantastic experience.

“Fantastic House!” My family traveled to Ireland for a vacation and wedding. Peter was extremely helpful in booking the house for our large group. The website gave a great description of the house with pictures, but our experience exceeded our expectations! This is an absolutely wonderful house! The location is convenient and beautiful. Banagher is a great town with wonderful stores and pubs! The house is very comfortable and spacious, with plenty of room for our large family. We are already talking of a return!

“Perfect place a true paradise for a family holiday.” Great house, plenty of room for twelve people. Very high standard of cleanliness and furnishings. The best holiday home we have ever stayed in (and we've stayed in a few ). It's pet friendly so it was great to be able to bring the dog with us. We had such a laugh having tournaments at night in the pool room. Great location for peace and quiet so we were able to make the most of the beautiful gardens watching the boats go by along the river at the bottom of the garden. Great fishing to be had off the jetty, just remember to bait the river the day before you want to fish this makes a big difference. There is a SuperValu store in the town which is great for getting all of your essentials in and a pub called Flynns for food, but to be honest we cooked meals ourselves most nights great BBQ out back and huge big kitchen to eat in it was more relaxed. The only downside was the road outside had no footpaths so you couldn't just go out walking, also the town had no swimming pool or cinema that the kids wanted to go to which are in either Athlone or Tullamore so this meant we relied on the cars to go eveywhere. “Lovely house, beautiful setting, considerate host, good accomadations.” The house is located on the Shannon River, a lovely spot, only minutes from the town of Banagher. The floor plan permits a family to spread out, and everyone can find some privacy. In good weather, the land provides good outdoor recreation; in bad weather, the video equipment and the pool table provide ample recreation. The house is within minutes of main roads, and travel to other counties/places in Ireland is easy. My daughter and grand- children lovedd the place.
