The Koh Samui region
The island was probably first inhabited about 15 centuries ago, settled by fishermen from the Malay Peninsula and Southern China. It appears on Chinese maps dating back to 1687, under the name Pulo Cornam. The name Samui is mysterious in itself. Perhaps it is an extension of the name of one of the native trees, mui, or from the Malay word Saboey, meaning "safe haven". Ko is the Thai word for "island".
Until the late 20th century, Ko Samui was an isolated self-sufficient community, having little connection with the mainland of Thailand. The island was even without roads until the early 1970s, and the 15 km journey from one side of the island to the other involved a whole-day trek through the mountainous central jungles.
Ko Samui has a population of about fifty-five thousand (source: Samui Mayor's Office) and is based primarily on a successful tourist industry, as well as exports of coconut and rubber. It even has its own international airport, Samui Airport, with flights daily to Bangkok and other major airports in Southeast Asia such as Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. Whilst the island presents an unspoilt image to the public perception, economic growth has brought prosperity, reflecting Samui's growth as a tourist destination, the Cunard ship MS Queen Victoria (a 2000-plus passenger ship) docked at Samui during its 2011 world cruise.
Ko Samui, being in Surat Thani Province, has essentially two seasons; warm and tropical most of the year, with a short rainy season. Unlike Phuket and most of the rest of Southern Thailand which has a 6-month rainy season between May and November, Samui's weather is relatively dry for the vast majority of the year, with the rainy season being primarily confined to November. For the rest of the year, since the weather is tropical, when it does rain, it usually doesn't last long; rain showers of 20–60 minutes are typical.
Events and festivalsBuffalo Fighting Festival One of the best-known festivals on Ko Samui is its Buffalo Fighting Festival, which is held on special occasions such as New Years Day and Songkran. Unlike Spanish bull-fighting, the fighting on Ko Samui is fairly harmless. The fighting season varies according to some ancient customs and ceremonies. The buffalo are beautifully decorated with ribbons and gold-painted leaves. Before the contest which lasts just two rounds, monks spray them with holy water. The winning owner typically takes home millions of baht in prize money.
Ten Stars Samui Art Party A recurring cultural event bringing together art lovers, local Thai and international artists and their new, original artworks. These bi-monthly events, hosted at various high-end resorts and other 5-star venues on the island, focus on building the art community on Ko Samui with presentations by featured artists.
Bowling Championship is an annual bowling event held in May every year. Avis Samui Tennis Open The annual amateur tennis tournament held in July. The Fisherman's Village Festival This five-day festival is celebrated with fun, music and food. The music is usually played by well-known artists and food tents sell inexpensive cuisine provided by local hotels.
Triathlon Event The International Triathlon Union organizes this event every year. This event in Ko Samui draws more than five hundred participants from around the world. The event attracts competitors and visitors as well as locals. This event actually has never taken place and was promoted via a website only.
Samui Regatta The Samui Regatta is a sailing tournament, held every year. The tournament is internationally known and competitors come from as far away as Australia, Singapore, Japan and China. This event, for boats of all sizes and shapes, began in 2002.
Local food in general, Southern Thai food is renowned for its spiciness. Much of the cuisine has its origins in Malay, Indonesian and Indian food. Favourite dishes from the south include Indian-style Muslim curry (massaman), rice noodles in fish curry sauce (Khanom Jeen) and chicken biryani.
Local food in Ko Samui and its province of Surat Thani are salted eggs and rambutan.

Hello and thank you so much for your positive review. We are thrilled that you had an excellent vacation and all was well with your accommodation. We were happy that you liked the area and that there were enough facilities surrounding the villa. We apologize that you only received one set of villa keys, guests can have as many sets as they need. The idea of the entrance doors having an audible bell when opened, is so that guests are aware of who is entering the villa if they are laying by the pool and wish to protect their modesty.
We hope to welcome you back..

"A hidden gem!"
We couldn't have wished for a more perfect location for our 20th wedding-anniversary trip to Koh Samui, for us and our two boys (aged 13 & 10 years)! Tucked away in a quiet village, Baan Siri Varee is a design-lovers dream. Minimal and cool, this beautifully designed modern villa is set in a quiet and tranquil area, off the beaten track and tucked away from the hustle & bustle. The villa itself has all 'mod cons', is very well fitted out and to a high spec, and has a great sense of space. And as well as the fab pool and garden (great for two active boys!), the outdoor dining and relaxing areas were fantastic and very well used! There is easy access to the beach, which is a lovely stroll down through the tiny village, as well as access to the local shops for basic supplies, as well as a couple of local restaurants for great, authentic thai cooking (particularly the one owned by the young German guy and his Thai partner). We were able to easily hire a car from one of the local businesses too (who also do scooter hire), at a very reasonable day rate, as well as get great massages at the far end of the beach!
There are also two small beach resorts on the beach front, where you can eat and use their pool areas too. And watch the water buffalo being washed at sunset!
Couple of things to note: Songthaews were in short supply at the main road, so you do need to hire transport to get anywhere; and the local shops have a limited amount of products on offer, so a trip to one of the bigger super markets (e.g: Tesco Lotus) for a proper cupboard-filling shop is well worth it!
Thank you so much for your positive feedback. We were very happy to learn of your satisfaction with the villa and the village area.
With all best wishes,
Victor and Chai

Thank you for taking the time to review our beautiful villa. We appreciate all feedback, whether positive or negative. We would like to respond item by item noted in your review:
There are shops and restaurants within easy walking distance of the villa, indeed, there is a seven eleven supermarket which is 24 hours. There are at least 9 restaurants located in the village and on the beach. They range from a 4 star resort restaurant to a humble local Thai cafe which also offers take away and delivery service. We even have an Austrian bakery in the village for fabulously fresh bread each morning.
There are exactly 6 sun beds located at the villa: 2 by the pool, a double sunbed/lounger on the upper sun-deck and 2 more folding sun beds in the storeroom.
Unfortunately, the island sometimes suffers from erratic electricity supply due to over demand. Every year the local authorities promise us that they will fix the problem but it still continues. We do have power cuts but perhaps this is the price to pay for visiting such a beautiful tropical island. This problem affects the entire island, not just Bantai. We brought engineers from Samsung to look at the brand new refrigerator and they confirmed all was working correctly. We even replaced the sound system, which you said did not work. On one occasion, my partner and I visited the villa, at your request, three times. We even had the boss of the electricity company come to the villa in order to show him first hand the issues. I personally offered you a full refund if you wanted to move to another villa or hotel, you refused.
We have staff in order to maintain our villa to a great standard - gardeners (twice weekly) pool boys(twice weekly) and housekeepers (twice weekly). We are sorry if you felt that you were interrupted all the time.
we have checked the water and the water filter but could not find any odor or brown discoloration. Our water is filtered by three mediums - silica, manganese and charcoal.
Yes, the pool is 1.7m deep but does have a safety shelf or ledge at one end. You will note in our description of the villa we state that the villa is not suitable for young children.
We have acted on your comment regarding outdoor dining and have purchased a table and stools. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
When you were checked in to the villa our Villa Manager, Sue, informed you to take care with security and to use the safe provided to secure your valuables, but more importantly, not to leave anything of value downstairs when you went to bed. You did, you also left a window open/unlocked and unfortunately you lost a phone and money. We are insured, but there must be evidence of a break in to satisfy the insurance company. Our Villa Manager did offer to take you to the police station to report the incident and to obtain any paperwork required for your travel insurance. We again offered you a full refund if you wished to find alternative accommodation, but you refused. I fail to see what more we could have done to ensure that your holiday was a truly pleasurable and positive experience.
You marked us as only 2 points for our meeting, greeting and airport transfer service which we cannot understand. Our Driver was waiting for you at the airport with a sign, the moment you arrived you were escorted to the minivan and were then transferred to the villa without delay. We fail to see how we can improve on this.
Once again, many thanks for your feedback.

"Modern tropical villa tastefully decked out, lovely owners"
Really nice stay, lovely villa and the owners were friendly, helpful and gave us our privacy. Village near by is like Samui in the old days, very warm people and definitely part of the experience.
Little restaurant nearby had excellent food with grumpy staff, actually better than the Orient Express owned hotel nearby (nice ambience and worth going to though).
We have 2 kids, a 2 year old and a 6 year old who had a great time. We loved chilling to music on a nice sound system playing with the kids in the pool.
Pick up and drop off from the airport was perfect, on time etc.

"An amazingly luxurious and spacious villa in a great location."
We were lucky enough to stay here a for a week in February. The first thing that hits you about the place is the attention to detail and an extremely high level of finish.
The gardens and pool were brilliant and there was a lovely outside area but in the shade, with a fan and tv - perfect for getting out of the way of the midday sun!
All the rooms bedrooms were large en suite and the master bedroom + bathroom was amazing.
The beach is a very short walk away, and there are some really good restaurants just around the corner.
We would love to stay here again!
Thank you so much for your positive words. We are very happy to learn that your stay was a good one. We look forward to welcoming you again.
With best wishes,

"Absolutely beautiful villa. Holiday of a lifetime!"
From the moment we arrived in Koh Samui until we left we had the perfect holiday. We were greeted at the airport and even had food and drinks waiting in the kitchen when we arrived.
This villa is particularly special as it is beautifully decorated, having a modern feel with some authentic Thai furnishings. We spent most days lazying in the 32 degree sunshine, dipping in the lovely pool to cool down. The villa is kept immaculate by the owners.
Baan Siri Varee location was perfect for us as the beach was a short walk with a few shops and restaurants close by. Maenam and Bo Phut are only a short drive away for walking streets and more restaurants.
Our holiday was a complete dream and we can't wait to do it all again!
