The Scottish Highlands region

The West Highlands benefit from the temperate climate provided by the Gulf Stream, enjoying warm summers and mild winters. Balmacara, a picturesque village with a local pond and ducks as a centre has a variety of wildlife within the area.
There are an abundance of mountains and sea lochs and changing views wherever you go to in your travels and seals, otters, porpoise, dolphins and whales are the norm.
The Balmacara area
Balmacara is in a perfect position to access local walks in the area, (literature supplied), and day trips to Kintail, Glenelg, Applecross and Skye are within easy reach.
Only half an hour away is the Port of Armadale where the famous "Road to the Isles" and Mallaig can be reached by ferry. A more romantic crossing to Skye can be boarded in Glenelg, on the old car ferry, and, the destination, Kylerhea lends itself to a fantastic landing place to explore the south end of Skye.
All sorts of outside pursuits can be catered for, including mountain climbing, sailing, kayaking, mountain biking, horse-riding, (in Balmacara), local fishing for mountain trout and even leisurely sightseeing!
Good quality Highland folk music is played regularly in the area and can be heard on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Plockton and Sundays in Dornie.

"What a great week of pleasure and peace we had in this wonderful home. Our girls (7 & 10) loved it to play hide and seek in the lovely gardens. I cant say much about the local restaurants, cause I really enjoyed cooking in the spacious, clean and fully equipped kitchen every night and then having dinner at the round table on the lawn. We were all amazed by the superb views over to the gloaming slopes of Beinn Sgrithall (the big mountain in the south). My photos don´t do it justice. Even the midges seemed to be gentle these wonderful moments and if not, we used "Smidge" repellent from the Kyle Pharmacy, (the first I found that really works). We say thanks again to the owners for all their kindness and hospitality and will return as soon as possible. ........a family from Hamburg/Germany |

This is the best holiday cottage we've ever been in. Myself , my husband, our big dog and (for some of the trip) my dad, sister and 2 young nieces stayed at this house in the first week of May. Weather was glorious and the ever changing views from the house mean you hardly need to leave. My nieces had a ball running round the garden playing hide & seek. Having an additional ground floor bedroom and shower room was great for my elderly dad. We only ate out two nights, preferring to eat outside at the patio table & chairs relaxing and enjoying the view. Even if the weather isn't great, this cottage is so cosy and homely it would not waste the trip - the views would be even more beautiful and dramatic. Plenty to see and do in the area. The owners are lovely, as is their dog Max who regularly visited us. Would highly recommend. |
