The County Antrim region
Ballymoney is a medium size shopping town, catering for surrounding rural population. Its location just off the main Belfast to L'Derry Road means its has good roads to travel anywhere along the North Antrim coast and Belfast is 52 mile by car or about an hours drive (or ease the strain and take the train). There are some old family shops and bakeries with many opportunities to buy gifts.
It has lots of leisure facilities with a leisure centre, swimming pool, football playing fields and indoor sports. The famous motor cycle racing champion Joey Dunlop lived in Ballymoney and a memorial garden is there in remembrance of him. His pub which is part of the train station is well worth a visit. Each May there is a display of his motor cycles and many achievements featured in the Town Hall. The North West 200 which he attended is within easy reach.
Ballymoney area
This is a special place for a special holiday with unspoilt landscape and coastline. The Giant's Causeway is world famous for it's rock formation, outstanding scenic beauty and mystery. It is only 16 miles from Ballymoney and as the road is flat and straight between Ballymoney and the Giants Causeway it is ideal for cycling. The North West motor cycle races are also within easy reach.
Bushmills Distillery the oldest licenced distillery in the world, opened in 1608 is closeby and the Black Bush whiskey is worth trying. The North Antrim coast is one of the most scenic spots anywhere in Ireland and the views from Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge looking over to Rathlin are magnificent. The scenic coastal route is just a few miles away, and Co Donegal is within easy reach by car.
How to get there
