Ballyconnell is a vibrant and picturesque town in West Cavan located on the Shannon-Erne Waterway. This waterway links the Shannon and Erne rivers. This canal was initially opened in 1856, but was re-opened recently for cruisers, boats and canoes to explore the waterway. Ballyconnell is located 28km from Cavan town.It is overlooked by the Slieve Russell mountains. Such a beautiful place to holiday with plenty of activities of all sorts to keep all the family entertained. It is a lively town, located in the heart of the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark, an area of scenic beauty with numerous events taking place throughout the year.
Ballyconnell is highly regarded for its coarse fishing and is a good location to sample some golf courses and outdoor activity. The area has many sites of archaeological interest, including the promontory fort at Ballyhugh (5 kilometres) and Killycluggin (6 kilometres) where the decorated Killycluggin Stone was found. Dating back to the Iron Age, this important stone contains Celtic motifs first found at La Tsne in Switzerland. A replica of the stone is now there - the original is now on display in the National Museum.
The town has a number of pubs, restaurants and nightclub. The stunning Slieve Russell Hotel & Country Club offers an 18-hole championship golf course, country club, several restaurants and bars. Nearby ODD Gamespark provides outdoor activities for active groups in search of some high octane fun.
