The Kwa Zulu Natal region

KwaZulu, a term which means "Land of the Zulu," is composed of what was in ancient times the kingdom of Zululand, situated in the northern part of the province. The souther n part of the province is composed of the lands of Natal, a region named by Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama who reached the shores of the province on Christmas Day of 1497. Natal is a Portuguese term which means “birth of Christ”. After the end of Apartheid in 1994, KwaZulu and Natal were combined, and the province was renamed as KwaZulu-Natal, or KZN.

KwaZulu-Natal is blessed with majestic land forms, possessing a wonderful balance of lowlands, hilly plateaus and mountainous areas. Standing in the northern part of the province are the proud granite mountains of Lebombo, while the Drakensberg mountains sit in the west. The province too is blessed with clear white waters coming the Tugela River the one of South Africa's largest rivers situated in the heart of the region. Majority of the population of the province is of Zulu descent, and speaks Zulu language. It is the largest province in South Africa in terms of population, being a home to 10,014,500 people.

Ballito area

Ballito, the heart of the North Coast just 30 minutes north of Durban, lies nestled between rippling fields of sugar cane, KwaZulu Natal’s famous Green Gold, and is flanked to the east by golden beaches and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Ballito is the Pearl of the North Coast.

The town’s origins date back to 1953, when a group of entrepreneurs began investigating land to develop a township in the Compensation Beach area. Proclaimed a township in 1954, Ballito, whose name was gleaned from a magazine advertisement meaning “Little Ball”, became a town board in 1966. The town, which reached borough status in 1986, is well-known for its superb, safe and unspoiled beaches and splendid surroundings.

Ballito’s friendly, village atmosphere is a welcome haven from the fast pace of big city life, yet it offers all the modern amenities and services to residents and holiday-makers alike.
