The Scottish Highlands region

The pretty, traditional village of Tomintoul is located in the North Eastern region of the Cairngorms National Park, on the noted Speyside Way. This is an area of stunning natural beauty which, while remaining unspoilt and rugged, offers an abundance of activities to suit all tastes.

Heading west from the village will take you out to the Lecht Ski centre and further on to Royal Deeside, Braemar and Balmoral before reaching Aberdeen. Heading North will take you past the Glenlivet Distillery and Ballindalloch Castle, before heading deeper into malt whisky territory, including the Speyside Cooperage and the renown Glenfiddich Distillery.

The village itself lies in the Glenlivert Crown Estate, and there is an abundance of waymarked trails to suit all abilities which will allow you to explore this fantastic area. Rich in wildlife and history, you might like to discover the Whisky Smuggler's trail or the Heather priests seminary, Scalan College. Horseriding, golf, fishing and shooting are all available locally. The famous winter resort of Aviemore is only 40 minutes away and the village Ranger Station and tourist information centre can provide details of Highland Games, agricultural shows, guided walks, whisky festivals and other activities.

Ballindalloch

Visitors should enjoy some of the marked walks in order to appreciate the wealth of wildlife and traditional countyside. The Lecht offers winter and summer activites for families, while the Glenlivet and other distilleries offer tours in season (it is advisable to check on thier seasons, and there are age restrictions on some tours).

Beautiful Ballindalloch Castle, seat of the Macpherson-Grant family should not be missed (from Easter to October usually). In the summer, the area offers a wealth of Highland Games and shows, which are advertised locally. Speyside itself is home to various festivals of whisky, walking and music. For whisky lovers, a visit to the famous 'Whisky Castle' in Tomintoul will be thoroughly appreciated.

A trip to the Ranger Station or Tourist Info office in Tomintoul will help you plan your stay; locally available activities include horse-riding, golf, fishing , shooting, ski-ing in season as well as walking and wildlife watching.

"Perfect location for skiing/sightseeing"

Grant Cottage is perfectly located for skiing at The Lecht and general sightseeing of the beautiful area. The town of Tomintoul has everything you need within a stone's throw from the cottage. We were fortunate that there was enough snow to do some skiing but the roads were completely clear! The cottage was extremely clean (I know Jean had a quick turnaround and still found time to add many extra's such as shortbread and milk!) It's these little touches that really make a holiday stand out and if there was anything I needed to know before our trip, I just sent an email to Jean (for us it was local entertainment for Hogmonay!) We ate at the local pub each evening as the food was great and the log fire was very appealing! The cottage is less than an hours drive from Inverness airport so the journey from one end of the country to the other was extremely easy and quick. All in all, this break was perfect for a family of novice skiiers that wanted a cheap ski holiday that was quick and easy in a lovely location.

"We will be back"

Just got back from our 1 week stay in the very clean, very well equipped Grants Cottage, Tomintoul. We enjoyed the Cottage and Surrounding area so much we have already planned for our next trip back. The size of the Cottage is exactly the right for a family of four with stylish decor and a very cosy feel to the place, which is what you want when booking a cottage. Jean the owner was very friendly and helpful, who cared enough to check on us when the snow was falling down very thick and fast. Thanks again and we will See ya Soon.
