The Hebrides/Skye region

The Isle of Skye lies just off the west coast of Scotland and is now connected to the Scottish mainland by a road bridge at the Kyle of Lochalsh. One of the largest of the western isles, Skye provides for an ideal holiday location with plenty of amenities for family holidays yet retaining a stunning beauty and tranquillity for a peaceful break in northern Scotland. This is a great spot for wildlife lovers, whether it's on the land, in the air or on the sea. Keep a look out for elusive otters and dolphins or if you're really lucky you might glimpse a passing golden eagle! It's easy to take to the sea and boat hire is readily available.

Balgown

Uig is located on the north-west of the island within an area known as the Trotternish Peninsula. Ancient geological activity created a number of stunning rock formations in this region such as The Old Man of Storr- the conquest of which is every serious rock climber's dream – and the Kilt Rock both of which should be on the ‘must see' list. However, this is a region where outdoor pursuits are taken very seriously and the nearby Skye's outdoor activity centre offers an excellent range of fresh air sports such as sailing, canoeing and guided walks. Also high on the ‘must see' list should be Portree, the island's picturesque capital. The vibrant coloured dwellings are a real tonic as is the bustling little harbour which is cheek by jowl with some of the finest fish restaurants to be found in the whole of Scotland. Portree also has an interesting range of shops, a modern, well equipped leisure centre which includes a 25m swimming pool and climbing wall. The local wildlife is rich and varied and visitors will have a strong chance of spotting the majestic Golden Eagle wheeling overhead. Boat trips to view the astonishing range of marine life that live close to the island's shore can be arranged at numerous locations such as Uig or Portree itself. For a day off Skye a visit to the iconic Scottish castle of Eilean Donan is also highly recommended. The castle has an excellent collection of Jacobite artefacts on display and the very punch bowl used by the ‘estimable' Dr Johnson during his visit to the region!
