The North Wales / Snowdonia / Gwynedd region
Southern Snowdonia in Wales is one of the UK's best-kept secrets. Long favoured for walking holidays, the region is breathtakingly beautiful with well maintained roads and stunning scenery. Less craggy and rugged than the northern region around the Llanberis Pass at the foot of Snowdon, more rolling, green and gentle. Centrally placed for easy access to the coast, Barmouth being the nearest coastal town, with Blue Flag beach and only 40 minutes drive from Bala. From here travel north to historic Harlech Castle, Porthmadog and Criccieth or south to Aberdovey. Inland, Chester is only 1 hours drive away and Liverpool, affectionately known as "the capital of Wales" , City of European Culture 2008 only another 30 minutes travelling through the Mersey Tunnel. Visit museums galore, the birthplace of The Beatles, Cavern Walks, The Albert Dock and shop till you drop in this friendly and vibrant city and be back in your Welsh country cottage for dinner after a real cultural extravaganza!
Bala area
The jewel in the crown of the bustling town of Bala is undoubtedly Bala Lake. 4 miles long and ½ mile wide with the sleepy village of Llanuwchllyn at one end and Bala at the other, they are joined by the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway, a tribute to the byegone era of steam engines. The Lake offers watersports, a foreshore area for picnics and paddling, sailing, windsurfing and fishing. Nearby at Frongoch is the National White Water Centre, Canolfan Tryweryn for white water rafting, canoeing and kayaking, where clean mountain water is released from the dam to create the most natural white knuckle ride! 20 minutes from Bala is the Mecca of mountain biking, Coed Y Brenin, where environmentally- friendly trails have been carefully constructed throughout this beautiful forest for all to enjoy the pleasures of pedal power from extreme Olympic standard mountain biking to simple cycling without being challenged! 4x4 Landrover Experience, Jeep Safari, Paintballing, Quad Biking and Pony Trekking are just a few of the activities which can be found locally. Bala is the founding-place for Sheepdog Trials, dating back to 1890, and more recently the first venue for the World Championships. A very special location, with a holiday guaranteed to offer something for everyone. We regularly welcome families of 3 generations who still leave with a to-do list for the next holiday!
