The Heart of England/Peak District
The Peak District is situated at the southern end of the Pennines in Central England covering most of northern Derbyshire as well as parts of Cheshire, Yorkshire and Staffordshire. Over 22 million day visits are made to the Peak District National Park every year, making it the second-most visited National Park in the world.
For those interested in history, there are a number of stately homes to visit such as Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Eyam Hall, all of which offer a range of cultural activities throughout the year.
The Peak District provides opportunities for many types of outdoor activity. An extensive network of public footpaths and numerous long-distance trails (over 3000 km in total), as well as large open-access areas, are available for hillwalking and hiking. Bridleways are commonly used by mountain bikers, as well as horse riders. Some of the long-distance trails re-use former railway lines; they are much used by walkers, horse riders and cyclists.
The local towns of Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock Bath, each famous in its own right, offer culture, shopping, restaurants and traditional markets and if you still have energy, there is always the famous theme park of Alton Towers.
The beautiful village of Ashford-in-the-Water lies near the heart of the Peak District, three miles from the bustling market town of Bakewell, five miles from Buxton, famous for its spa and waters, and less than 15 miles from Sheffield.
There are excellent walks from the door, especially down Deep Dale to reach the River Wye or down Lathkill Dale and Cressbrook Dales down to Monsal Dale and Monsal Head. Cressbrook Dale and Tansley Dale are famous for their wild flowers, as are several other local dales.
In the summer, Ashford in the Water and many other local villages create unique well dressings from flower petals. And we have our very own Sheldon Day, including a Poultry show and Dog show.
At Christmas time, the area hosts a range of Christmas activities, such as carols in the caves at Castleton, music by local brass bands, events at nearby Chatsworth House, Xmas markets and whole villages dressed with Christmas lights..

"Fantastic stay at the Old Bakery"
Had a great couple of days here in the lovely village of Ashford-in-the-Water. The cottage is immaculately presented, with all the mod cons you would need whilst retaining some very nice period features and a cosy feel. The cottage is perfectly located for exploring the beautiful Peak District, which has an abundance of walks and superb country pubs- a particularly good one being the Packhorse at Little Longstone which is just over a mile and a half from the cottage (try a pint of White Swan or Jaipur - 2 excellent local ales!).
Recommend this place very highly, and we can't wait to return!

"Wonderful stay at The Old Bakery Cottage"
My husband and I stayed at The Old Bakery Cottage for a week and enjoyed every moment. The cottage is delightful, beautifully decorated and comfortable with all amenities. There is also a very pretty courtyard garden to relax in. Ideally situated in the lovely village of Ashford in the Water, near shop, tearoom and 2 pubs. Added to this is the bus which goes through the village every hour, this was ideal for us to visit Bakewell and Buxton on separate days, good sometimes to not use the car and sit and watch the beautiful countryside. Excellent walks right from the door, with village pubs to have a break if necessary! Chatsworth is nearby, stunning, and Haddon Hall, medieval house also brilliant. The cottage is superb and we would recommend it to anyone.
Thank you so much for the great review. We are so glad you enjoyed the cottage and the surrounding areas. We look forward to you returning again soon. Regards, LF
