The Heart of England / Peak District / Peak District/Derbyshire region

The scenery around Millers Dale is magnificent. Along the River Wye, just downstream of The Barn, lies Water-cum-Jolly, a magnificent river gorge with fine limestone cliffs which attract many rock-climbers, bird-watchers, walkers and fishermen. Most of this dale is a National Nature Reserve and an SSI renowned for its range of rare flowers, otters and buzzards.
The peak district is walker’s paradise. We are extremely fortunate to live in one of the many beautiful parts and within a stones throw are stunning walks by the river.

All within an easy drive are Chatsworth Stately Home, Well Dressings, Haddon Hall, Matlock Bath, restored mills, Youlgreave, Bakewell, Spa town of Buxton and the whole of The Peak District National Park on your doorstep.

Bakewell / Millers Dale area

Alton Towers- a huge family theme park.
About 40 minutes drive from The Barn. TEL: +44 (0)8705 204060. Open late March - Admission charged.

Well Dressings in Derbyshire's Peak District:

Gullivers Kingdom
[A well-planned theme park aimed at families with younger children (this will probably be too tame for 13 and overs)

Masson Mill-Matlock Bath
The mill closed as recently as 1991 and has been converted into a shopping village, with exhibition and conference centre, but it also has a working textile museum.

Castleton Caves
Castleton has 4 underground show caves, all worth a visit, for their own interesting features. These are Blue John Cavern, Speedwell Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern and Peak Cavern.

Granby Arcade and Bakewell Old House Museum-Bakewell
Bakewell has a wide range of shops and you will be able to find anything you need. Some of the shops are in Granby arcade which is home to a small group of gift shops out of the rain!

Haddon Hall
Haddon Hall is a fortified medieval manor house dating from the 12th Century, and is the home of Lord and Lady Edward Manners whose family have owned it since 1567. Haddon Hall is probably the finest example of a fortified medieval manor house in existence. Present-day Haddon Hall dates from the 12th Century to the early 17th Century, whereupon it lay dormant for over two hundred years from 1700 until the 1920s, when the 9th Duke and Duchess of Rutland restored the house and gardens, and once again made it habitable.

Chatsworth and Farm Shop
The home of the Dukes of Devonshire, Chatsworth is one of the true treasure houses of Britain, set in extensive parklands beside the River Derwent. Begun as an Elizabethan mansion by Bess of Hardwick, rebuilt starting in 1686. Everything is on a massive scale, opulent and designed to impress (it does). Too much art and furniture to mention Chatsworth farm shop offers everything from venison steaks and fine chocolates, to sparkling champagne and beautiful sheepskin rugs.
For more information call: +44 (0) 1246 565300

Peak Rail-Rowsley, Matlock
Peak Rail run regular Steam and Diesel hauled heritage passenger trains between Matlock Riverside and Rowsley.

Tram Museum-Crich
Nestling high up in the heart of Derbyshire overlooking the famous Derwent Valley and open almost throughout the year, Crich Tramway Village is a lovingly restored period village that is also home to the National Tramway Museum and its world renowned archives.

Caudwells Mill-Rowsley
The mill is an excellent example of a working 19th century mill, with water turbines powering the machinery.

Further details indoors:
The Entrance Hall
As you enter The Barn the first things you may notice are the wealth of original timbers which contrast with the soft cream of the walls and the natural stone flagging of the floor. The hallway is home to a monk’s bench on which you will find tourist information and our guest book. We have supplied an umbrella, walking stick and torch should you wish to borrow them during your stay. Leading from the entrance hall are The Dairy, The Stables and the wide stone stairs to the second floor.

The Lounge
At the top of the stone flagged staircase is the galleried lounge. The ceilings are high with exposed roof trusses and chandeliers. A silk sofa and two Edwardian salon chairs are provided for your comfort. There is a pedestal mahogany desk, CD mini hi-fi and leather reclining chair. The desk houses a comprehensive information folder, games, maps and books. The bespoke galleried balustrade, of wrought iron and reclaimed oak, frames the oak faced wall of the kitchen. With a stripped wood floor, ash window seat and stone shelf arch this is truly a spectacular room in which to wile away your evenings.

The Kitchen
The kitchen is equipped to the highest standards with a huge range style stove, Belfast sink and stripped pine furniture. The floor has been laid in a French country style using Spanish hand made terracotta tiles inlaid with dark pine. The stripped pine table and elm kitchen chairs provide the perfect dining place. As in the lounge, the ceilings are high, with the roof trusses exposed, lit by a single wrought iron chandelier.
You will find, upon arrival, complimentary wine and “first morning” breakfast foods. We also supply some tea, coffee and sugar to allow you to unwind after your journey. You will find homemade bread and biscuits for a snack, along with fresh milk and free range eggs from the local farm. There are several dry goods including salt, pepper and herbs. Bin bags, cling film, kitchen roll and tin foil can be found in the bespoke pine kitchen cupboards.

A door from the kitchen leads into the pantry.

The Pantry
With a solid wood floor, exposed beams and witches stools, the pantry accommodates the fridge, freezer, microwave, washing machine and dishwasher. Here you will also find a hairdryer, iron, ironing board, airer, cleaning utensils and washing basket.

The Bedrooms
All of the bedrooms have been named in recognition of their 18th century origins. All have double beds, en-suite bathrooms, colour televisions and stripped pine floors. Your beds will be made up before your arrival with freshly laundered linen, duvets and patchwork quilts. All white cotton bed linen, bath, hand and tea towels are included within our prices.

Arrival and Departure Times
You may arrive any time after 15.00 hours at the start of your holiday. Please would you vacate The Barn by 10.00 hours on the morning of your departure.

The Hayloft
Exposed roof trusses, aged lintels and the original limestone walls combine together to give this room its appeal. This, the largest of the three double bedrooms, is a tranquil retreat. Furnished in honey pine and oak it contains a single day bed piled with cushions and an iron double bedstead. The day-bed transforms into a full sized single bed, enabling The Hayloft to become a twin room. Two wrought iron antiqued chandeliers grace the ceiling, illuminating the beams to their best effect. With a view of the River Wye and the hills beyond, there is no finer place for breakfast in bed.

The Stables
The Stables is a well proportioned double bedroom with exposed beams and lintels which add to the overall traditional effect. It is furnished with mahogany and wrought ironwork complimented by a colour scheme of soft lilacs and dusty blue. Combined with original oil paintings of the surrounding countryside, by a local artist, this room is a serene and peaceful haven.

The Dairy
The Dairy is a spacious double family bedroom which boasts an enormous bathroom. It is decorated in a crisp cream with wrought iron and stripped pine; coupled with the exposed beams it creates a stunning effect. Adding to the clean lines of this dramatic room is a bold navy print contrasting beautifully with the white bed linen and cream decor. The overall co-ordinated look is softened by the white lace at the windows and the plump cushions scattered on the double and the single day-bed. This day-bed transforms into a full sized single bed, enabling The Dairy to become a twin room.

The Bathrooms
All of the bedrooms within The Barn are en-suite. All bathrooms are fitted to the highest standards with white suites and solid wood floors. We will supply for the duration of your stay freshly laundered towels and bath mats. You will also find one toilet roll in each bathroom to tide you over until you go shopping. Each bathroom has a towel rail radiator, halogen lighting and exposed beams.
The Hayloft en-suite is a shower room containing a double shower cubicle for those who prefer a shower.
The Dairy has the largest bathroom and is fitted with two sinks, a freestanding Edwardian slipper bath; with chrome feet and hand held shower; double walk in shower cubicle and a toilet. An easy chair is provided for your convenience. This bathroom is furnished in stripped pine. It has two windows and a view over the River Wye and to the hill beyond.
The Stables bathroom boasts a Victorian freestanding bath; with chrome feet and hand held shower; with a matching suite of wash basin and toilet. It is furnished in complimentary mahogany furniture including an antique marble washstand.

Further details outdoors:
The Decking
The outside decking area is accessed from either the kitchen or the Lounge. It is surrounded by the garden, which is dominated by an amazing limestone backdrop. Soon to be completed, the terraced garden will lead up onto the Monsal trail.
