Further details outdoors

Lion Cottage is an attractive stone cottage. It is south facing, with lovely views across the fields. It has a paved outside area with a bench; our folding table and chairs can also be placed there.

The Heart of England/Peak District

The Peak District is one of England's finest National Parks. From the rugged peaks of the north to the rolling hills of the south this is an area of unspoiled beauty. It is good walking and cycling country with many fine major walking routes and local footpaths, fantastic views and fascinating geological formations. The towns of Bakewell, Buxton, Hathersage and Matlock Bath all offer fascinating days out. Bakewell offers a traditional farmers' market, Buxtin offers fine architecture and an Opera House.

The area features many fine English country houses and estates now open to the public such as Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and many others. Some are run by the National Trust whereas others are still owned by the same family ofter many many generations.

If you are interested in the industrial revolution then you can follow a trail of cotton mills that were once the heart of British industry in the late 1700s, and some children (and adults) find the Tram Museum at Crich an interesting step back into history.

Bakewell

Birchover is a small, pretty and quiet village, surrounded by beautiful countryside. It features two excellent pubs, both serving a varied menu of delicious food and some good local beers. There are a number of walks from the doorstep - a circular walk up to Nine Ladies stone circle, a bronze age monument on Stanton Moor, or stride across the fields to the fascinating rocky outcrop of Robin Hood Stride, or stroll across the fields to the Winster, one of our nearest neighbouring villages.

If it gets wet and muddy we have a stone outhouse outside the front door where you can securely store muddy boots and bicycles.

Finally, if it all gets too slow and comfortable and you feel the need for a dose of adrenalin-pumping excitement then Alton Towers Theme Park is only 25 miles (40km) away.

Fantastic cottage. Very well equipped, in very pleasant village. Great area for walking with many unique landmarks for added interest. There are several pubs in easy walking distance, and the cottage is easily accessible via public transport. This was my second stay at lion Cottage and I would definitely stay again.

"Cosy, well equipped cottage in lovely village, ideal base for walkers / cyclists"

I booked Lion Cottage as a last minute weekend break for my partner's birthday. We took our daughters, both in their teens. Jane, the owner, could not have been more helpful in sorting out my booking unbelievably quickly. Within a few hours of first making contact, all of my questions had been answered, the booking made, and an information sheet emailed through to me.

The cottage was easy to find on the main street of the village, virtually next to the pub. Visitors to the pub are very respectful, and we heard absolutely no noise from people coming and going. Upon entering the cottage we were delighted to find a traditional interior with stone walls and beamed ceilings. A comfy living room adjoined a good sized dining room with an open fire, however the four of us just ate at the table in the well equipped kitchen.

The master bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, and there is a separate bathroom off the corridor between the two bedrooms. The double bed and the twin beds in the other room were all comfortable. The kitchen comes equipped with a microwave, washing machine, dryer and a cooker. There are a few personal touches around the cottage that leave you feeling as if you're making use of a friend's cottage while they're away, rather than it being a soulless holiday cottage. A bench just outside the front door of the cottage allowed us to sit and watch the marvellous colours in the sky as the sun set, accompanied by a drink or two. The kids were however happier sitting inside, using their laptops / tablets and making use of the WiFi provided at the property.

Regarding the village, it is very well placed for some wonderful walks / bike rides in the stunning surrounding countryside, with Bakewell and Matlock both under 6 miles away and several villages nearby. Chatsworth House is only about 8 miles away. All of these places can be reached walking or cycling if you are that way inclined, and mere minutes away by car. There is the Nine Ladies stone circle a relatively short walk from the cottage, across the wild and impressive Stanton Moor, well worth a visit and easy even for non experienced walkers to reach. Two pubs serve Birchover, however we only visited the one almost next door which was nice. A small shop next to the cottage sells a few grocery basics, but best to bring some shopping with you.

We only stayed at Lion Cottage for a long weekend, however there is enough to see and do in the surrounding area to fill a week or more, and the cottage makes an excellent base for reaching them. It is comfortable and well equipped enough for a stay of any length. Coming home to the cottage after a long walk is a delight, and it feels like a home from home within an hour of arriving. I hope to visit again and would recommend it to all. Many thanks to Jane for being so helpful and making the booking experience so smooth and painless.
