The Heart of England / Peak District / Peak District/Derbyshire region
The Peak District is an area of great natural beauty with rugged, peat-covered moorlands and magnificent limestone dales (great for walking and cycling, as well as other, more dangerous sports), plus picturesque villages and some interesting towns. It is the location of Britain's first National Park - the Peak District National Park, which is the the world's second most visited National Park. The Peak District has numerous interesting and exciting tourist attractions Probably the chief among these is Chatsworth House - a magnificent house set in a landscaped park which is the home of the Dukes of Devonshire - major landowners in the area. This is followed by Haddon Hall outside Bakewell - the home of the Manners family, who are the Dukes of Rutland - is a beautifully preserved medieval manor house. The Peak District is a fine place for outdoor activities such as walking and cycling, and each week and especially at weekends, many thousands of people come here to enjoy these activities. There are numerous interesting towns to explore. Buxton is the one with the longest history, having been founded by the Romans, who exploited the warm spring water to build thermal baths, for which the town became very popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result it has some magnificent buildings, notably the Georgian Crescent and the Opera House. It now has a thriving music and arts festival each summer. Bakewell was founded in Saxon Times and is the home of the Peak District National Park Authority and is a busy market town notable for its livestock market.

We held a humanist wedding celebration in the lounge/dining room and had family and friends staying over the weekend. Everyone thought the house was very good. The kitchen is exceptionally well appointed and we had some great meals together with different table combinations. Justin was great, even getting in champagne glasses for us. The views from the upper floors are particularly good and Monsal Head is a great base for walking, cycling and touring. |

We spent a weekend at Cliff House for my sister's hen weekend. We were 20 girls who had planned a classy weekend away and Cliff House fitted the bill perfectly. Every part of the experience was fantastic, from making the initial enquiry, the helpfulness of the owners throughout the planning (every one of my silly questions were answered so efficiently) to the arrival, the stay and even the departure (when Justin helped us start our car). The house is amazing, so spacious and fully equipped for every eventuality (there were no waiting lines for bathrooms and we were able to make cocktails and a 3 course meal effortlessly). To top it all off, the location and views are fantastic. I would not hesitate to recommend Cliff House and will be booking one of their other houses in the autumn for my husbands 40th. |
