The Heart of England / Peak District / Peak District/Derbyshire region

The Peak District is an upland area in central and northern England, It offers all year round activities and events for people of every age. For lovers of the outdoors, there are around 1,600 miles of footpaths across stunning scenery. Discover limestone dales full of rare wild flowers, stroll along trout filled rivers or watch skylarks soaring above heather clad moors. Walking, bird watching, caving, rock climbing, potholing, fishing, sailing, gliding and cycling are just some of the activities available.
For those interested in history, there are a number of stately homes to visit such as Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Eyam Hall, all of which offer a range of cultural activities throughout the year.
Visit the prehistoric sites of Arbor Low and Cresswell Crags, step back in time at The National Tramway Museum or take a ride on a steam train at Peak Rail. Discover the Norman castle and stunning caves in Castlelton, iron age settlements above Hathersage and the area's lead mining and industrial heritage sites.
The local towns of Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock Bath, each famous in its own right, offer culture, shopping, restaurants and traditional markets and if you still have energy, there is always the famous theme park of Alton Towers!
The Bakewell area
The beautiful village of Litton lies near the heart of the Peak District, one mile east of Tideswell, home of the "Cathedral of the Peak", five miles from the bustling market town of Bakewell, eight miles from Buxton, famous for its spa and waters, and less than 20 miles from Sheffield.
Candlelight Cottage looks onto the village green, with its stone cross and pair of stocks. The Red Lion Inn is well known for the quality of its beer and catering and the village shop provides essential provisions, post office facilities and home made cakes.
There are excellent walks from the door, especially down Litton and Tideswell Dales to reach the River Wye near Water cum Jolly, or down Tansley and Cressbrook Dales down to Monsal Dale and Monsal Head. Cressbrook Dale and Tansley Dale are famous for their wild flowers, as are several other local dales.
In the summer, Litton and many other local villages create unique well dressings from flower petals.
At Christmas time, the area hosts a range of Christmas activities, such as carols in the caves at Castleton, music by local brass bands, events at nearby Chatsworth House, Xmas markets and whole villages dressed with Christmas lights. The Litton Christmas tree is positioned just opposite Candlelight Cottage.
A full range of up to date tourist information is available in the cottage for your use.

Guestbook for Candlelight Cottage
Here's what people say about Candlelight Cottage:
We had a wonderful time at Candlelight Cottage Litton this spring. It is an invaluable experience to spend our holiday in such a characteristic English home while enjoying the benefits of an ecologically conscious household, which is exactly what Candlelight Cottage provided us with. The house itself is equipped with everything one would possibly need (and much more) and the welcome pack the owners so kindly offer to guests can prove life-saving if you arrive late in the evening…The house is a rustic building ... ... but cleverly and stylishly blended with modern technology. The owners were very helpful all along, they were careful to tell us everything we needed to know about the house and facilities. Also, they were exceptionally open and flexible when it came to questions. We were lucky enough to have spent a perfect holiday in Peak District with most beautiful weather, lots of sunshine and the friendliest locals on earth. Staying at Candlelight Cottage made our holiday even more complete.

Thank you for the warm hospitality. All the extra goodies made us feel very welcome here. Only problem, we don’t want to leave!
HM - Belgium
So completely equipped we brought along a lot of stuff we didn’t need because it was all provided. So exceptionally clean we felt we were the first guests to ever stay there.

Our second visit was not a disappointment – the cottage as lovely as ever. Thanks to Simon and Jill for another great holiday.

Andrew and I so enjoyed your cottage, every detail had been so carefully thought of and the cottage is very lovingly looked after. The decor and the well planned lighting really suit the cottage. We found everything we needed plus more, i.e. ground coffee, tea, olive oil etc, so many details on the area's attractions and walks that it would have taken a whole week to read them - I just wish we had had a week and not just three nights, oh, and of course the Bakewell tart, fresh bread and milk. It is the most well equipped self catering accommodation I have ever stayed in, and it was lovely and warm in cold November. Thank you so much.
