The Heart of England / Peak District / Peak District/Derbyshire region
The Peak District is an upland area in central and northern England, It offers all year round activities and events for people of every age. For lovers of the outdoors, there are around 1,600 miles of footpaths across stunning scenery. Discover limestone dales full of rare wild flowers, stroll along trout filled rivers or watch skylarks soaring above heather clad moors. Walking, bird watching, caving, rock climbing, potholing, fishing, sailing, gliding and cycling are just some of the activities available.
For those interested in history, there are a number of stately homes to visit such as Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Eyam Hall, all of which offer a range of cultural activities throughout the year.
Visit the prehistoric sites of Arbor Low and Cresswell Crags, step back in time at The National Tramway Museum or take a ride on a steam train at Peak Rail. Discover the Norman castle and stunning caves in Castlelton, iron age settlements above Hathersage and the area's lead mining and industrial heritage sites.
The local towns of Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock Bath, each famous in its own right, offer culture, shopping, restaurants and traditional markets and if you still have energy, there is always the famous theme park of Alton Towers!
The Bakewell area
The beautiful village of Litton lies near the heart of the Peak District, one mile east of Tideswell, home of the "Cathedral of the Peak", five miles from the bustling market town of Bakewell, eight miles from Buxton, famous for its spa and waters, and less than 20 miles from Sheffield.
Candlelight Cottage looks onto the village green, with its stone cross and pair of stocks. The Red Lion Inn is well known for the quality of its beer and catering and the village shop provides essential provisions, post office facilities and home made cakes.
There are excellent walks from the door, especially down Litton and Tideswell Dales to reach the River Wye near Water cum Jolly, or down Tansley and Cressbrook Dales down to Monsal Dale and Monsal Head. Cressbrook Dale and Tansley Dale are famous for their wild flowers, as are several other local dales.
In the summer, Litton and many other local villages create unique well dressings from flower petals.
At Christmas time, the area hosts a range of Christmas activities, such as carols in the caves at Castleton, music by local brass bands, events at nearby Chatsworth House, Xmas markets and whole villages dressed with Christmas lights. The Litton Christmas tree is positioned just opposite Candlelight Cottage.
A full range of up to date tourist information is available in the cottage for your use.

The cottage is in a lovely location overlooking Litton village green. We found it spotlessly clean, warm, comfortable and equipped to a very high standard. The welcome basket of local goodies was a very nice touch. The cottage definitely merits its 5 star status. The owners, Jill and Simon, are really welcoming and friendly, and very helpful with local information and advice. Litton itself is a beautiful village, with a well-equipped community shop a stone's throw away from the cottage and the Red Lion pub just opposite, where we had a very good dinner one evening. It's an excellent location for walking, cycling, and visiting many of the Peak District sites. |

We had a lovely short break here and were warm and cosy despite the snow outside. The road to the village was kept clear of snow and ice so we could have used the car if we had needed to but we had some lovely crisp, winter walks from the cottage instead. The village shop provided some basic necessities and the pub over the road was great for dinner one night. The cottage itself is extremely well maintained and equipped with everything you could possibly need. Simon and Jill were there to greet us and show us around and made us feel very welcome. I look forward to visiting in the future at a different time of year so that I can use the little garden at the back. |
