Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 7
The single-storey cottage has four large wooden-floored, wood-panelled and white-washed rooms each with shuttered double-glazed windows facing onto a cobbled lane, plus modern fitted kitchen, bathroom (shower over a small sitting bath) and separate WC, and is a few minutes' walk from the small town centre and river beach. It is about 125 years old, has thick walls rendered in a butter-coloured wash, and forms part of a traditional courtyard occupying a corner position.
The courtyard is completely enclosed and has a single driveway entrance. I own the whole courtyard which also comprises my own dwelling (not separately let out), a variety of outhouses available to guests including a garage, a summer kitchen and a wonderful cellar.
If you are looking for a quiet spot, where you can relax inside or in the garden, combined with the opportunity to visit fascinating historical, artistic and natural surroundings, it might be just what you are looking for. The cottage is also a good base for walking, cycling, birdwatching, fishing and angling activities, is only 30 minutes drive from the nearest outdoor spa, and is a good centre for driving tours of south-eastern Europe.

The rental charge includes full access to a wonderful ancient arched cellar, where there are benches and a table - ideal for cooling off in the summer.
The kitchen is fully equipped with sufficient glassware, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans for you to make everything from a boiled egg to a full dinner. There are saucepans, an espresso coffee machine, a percolator, juice maker, casserole dishes, baking tins, a hand-held mixer and dry-frier. The gas oven has an illuminated extractor hood.
The book-swap shelves offer something of interest to children and adults, the range including contemporary novels, and classics of English and Hungarian literature. Guests are welcome to leave books in the cottage and take others away. There is a collection of local tourist information leaflets updated regularly.
The collection of CDs and videos is not vast and a bit dated, but may provide some laughs and keep you occupied if you decide to lounge in one morning. Subject to the vagaries of reception, the TV offers variously Hungarian national channels, Duna regional and Baja local channels. Wi-fi access available.
|Further details outdoors|
The cottage door opens out onto the garden within the property's own walled courtyard. If we, as the English owners, are in residence at the adjoining cottage next door we will share with you only the gates to the estate and access to the outhouses. The grassed area is fine for children's games and there is a blow-up paddling pool and hosepipe for those hot days. Garden chairs, table and parasol are provided for dining on the patio and loungers are available for sunbathing on the grass. There is also adequate shade from a large silver fir tree to enable eating and playing to be enjoyed out of the sun. Summer guests tend to eat breakfasts and dinner al fresco, enjoying either the sun or shade whichever is preferable at the time.
There is parking space for one car within the locked courtyard. Bicycles - available to use strictly at the individual's own risk - are kept in the large garage.
The rental charge includes access to the 'summer kitchen' - an outhouse where laundry may be dried and where garden furniture and toys are stored. This kitchen also features an original solid-fuel oven (not currently in use) with smoking cupboard - for hams, fish etc, and a deep freshwater well, safely lidded.
There are two small three-legged metal barbecues with utensils and a stock of firewood available for outdoor use.
Use your credit or debit card to pay the deposit and letting charge securely via PayPal - you do not need to have a Paypal account to pay this way.
A starter food pack can be ordered in advance at £20 for two persons - payable on arrival by cash in sterling or Hungarian forints. Handy if you arrive late on Saturday or Sunday when shops are closed.
The English-speaking caretaker will meet you to handover keys, and is available for assistance or advice.
ATM machines are situated outside banks in Baja and elsewhere in Hungary. UK debit and credit cards are usable in some larger supermarkets, restaurants and filling stations, but expect to pay cash in most shops and cafes.
The Alfold/Great Hungarian Plains region
Baja is a small market town, river resort and port on the Danube, with many interesting architectural, artistic and folklore features, close to the major Gemenc Nature Reserve and Duna-Drava National Park. Baja is accessible by rail and coach links from Budapest, and its location on the Danube Plain makes it ideal for biking holidays. This area also offers excellent birdwatching possibilities including black stork, great bustard, golden orioles, nightingales. For anglers it is easy to obtain fishing licences for the many waterways and lakes off the Danube. Carp, catfish and pike-perch are prevalent.
It is a convenient centre for motoring tours of Hungary, Romania, Serbia & Montenegro, Slovenia and Croatia. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me by phone, post or email if you would like to book or want to talk it over.
I have been visiting this part of Hungary for twenty-seven years now and recommend its warm hospitality, traditional cuisine and famous wines. I look forward to hearing from you.
Walking distances from the house – 7 minutes to main square, 12 minutes to river beach, 15 minutes to bus/coach station, 20 minutes to railway station (public transport links by road and rail to Budapest – 150 km). Small supermarket for immediate needs eg milk, bread, toiletries, diagonally opposite house across the road, together with a fruit/vegetable stall. Poultry butcher, 'langos' take-away, pizzeria, antique shop, wine shop all within a few minutes' walk.
Baja has a classical Austro-Hungarian style town hall and immense town square with some small shops and bars. There is a thriving farmers' market on Wednesdays and Saturdays (go early), an art gallery, a museum, a jazz club, a hospital, a small department store and a cultural centre. The main street is pedestrianised with open-air café seating. There are two fine Catholic baroque style churches, two Serbian Orthodox churches, one former classical style synagogue, restored and now in use as a library. Local wine shop and fascinating curio shop within 5 minutes walk.
The town stands on the confluence of the Danube (Duna) with the tributary Sugovica. This provides a quiet beach area opposite the Petofi Island, with plenty of café terraces for drinks, light meals and snacks. Pedal boats for hire in season. There are several restaurants in town offering full lunch and dinner menus, popular dishes include traditional Baja fish soup, grilled carp and pike, lecso (paprika and tomato stew), goulash, goose liver, fried and grilled chicken and duck, pork schnitzels, braised beef, game. Sweet dish specialities: crepes, walnut noodles.
On the Pandur Island and on the opposite bank of Danube is the Gemenc nature reserve, part of the Duna-Drava National Park with many species of animals and birds including deer and wild boar, also rich vegetation of wild flowers, wild fruit trees, willows and birches. Baja is a quiet resort for Hungarians, not an international tourist centre. English-speaking visitors to the cottage are often the only such people in town.
Baja is within easy reach of Szekszard, Villány and Hajos wine regions, Pécs and Szeged – university towns with historical and artistic interest, Kesckemét – county town with eclectic architecture, theatre, galleries. Szeremle – arts and crafts colony. Davod and Nagybaracska – spa baths. Winter harbour for Danube shipping and boat repair yards on Pandur Island. Landscape mainly flat with some gentle undulation west of the Danube. Rich agricultural land supports paprika crops, sunflowers, grape vines, sweet corn, wheat, poultry and pig farms.
Baja is the "Fish Soup Capital of the World", and celebrates this annually during the second weekend of July with a massive open-air festival in the main square in which hundreds of cauldrons of the river fish soup are cooked on camp fires. See the Baja Annual Fish Soup Festival on Facebook.

"A comfortable, secure cottage & garden for a relaxing holiday in Baja, Hungary."

It's great to know that there are so many features, about both Baja and the cottage, that you enjoyed. The town is a hidden gem, and offers so much by way of nature and culture as you have found. This year the improvements to the cottage have included the installation of double-glazed easy-to-open windows and blinds, which you were the first to use. I will pass on your very welcome praise for the cleanliness and comfort of the cottage to our caretaker and cleaner. Thankyou for providing this valuable feedback, and I look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

"Typical Hungarian Town"
When we travel/holiday we try and stay in apartments or cottage and this is one of the best and the second time we have stayed here, near the center with lots of bars and restaurants ect; if you have a car you can shop at the large Tesco or if no car there are smaller supermarket near by.
Your time at the cottage is well supported by local people, the cottage was clean with all you need for self catering holiday
It's great to hear that the cottage is one of the best for you, and that you have enjoyed your second stay here. You came at one of the busiest times for Baja, approaching the annual Fish Soup Festival, and it's good to know you found things very lively in this southern Hungarian river town. The cottage is always being improved and you will be welcome to visit again - soon! Thankyou for your custom.

So glad - and impressed - to hear about the species of wildlife that you observed here in the south of Hungary. It was great to welcome you back for the second time, and even better to know that you will return, like swallows, next summer. Thankyou for your kind remarks for our caretaker and her efforts to make your visit memorable. Many thanks for your custom.

"Lovely spacious house in lovely Baja"
A lovely old traditiional Hungarian house, near the centre of Baja, with its swimming areas, vegetable market, town centre all within easy walking distance.
The cottage has a good shaded (and sunny) outside eating area, with lots of space for babies/ children. There is a small supermarket and vegetable stall almost opposite so very easy shopping.
Also the bus to Davod spa baths stops close by (about half an hour by bus).
About 20 minutes walk to the train/bus station.
It's great to know that you and your (very) young family found the facilities at the cottage so appealing, and to hear about the attractions of Baja. Like two other families here this summer, this was your second visit, and it is very rewarding to know that the cottage is so sought-after. Many thanks for your custom.

"Fantastic family holiday in Baja"
I travelled with my wife and young children. The journey to Baja involved a three hour onward trip from Budapest. Whilst we found this a little taxing, once we arrived the holiday which followed was absolutely delightful.
The owners met us on arrival. From the outset their hospitality was superb. They went well beyond the call of duty to make our stay enjopyable.
The cottage was lovely, meeting all of our domestic needs. Ample room and facilities for the children.
Baja is a gorgeous little town. We found the people fvery friendly, albeit hardly anyone spoke English. This just added to the adventure.
I really recommend the cottage, the town and above all the owners of the cottage.
A wonderful experience which left us feeling totally relaxed.
Thank you very much for taking the time to review your stay at the cottage in Baja. I'm delighted to learn just how pleasant you found the experience, and so glad that the children got a lot out of it. It's always very rewarding to know that guests have appreciated our offers of assistance, and we thoroughly enjoyed the time that you were our nextdoor neighbours! We will be glad to welcome you back should you wish to return!

It's so rewarding to hear the things that guests like about Baja, about the cottage. I'm very happy that the family enjoyed the peace and quiet of this small town, thank you for helping to identify the things your family liked most. "A charming and very relaxing stay with everthing we needed"
We loved Baja and the surroundings with easy access to the Danube and its swimming beaches. Great birding - golden orioles fluting constantly as you sat by the rivers. Nightingales never out of hearing and black kite, black stork, night heron all over. Wild boar wandering the woodland walks just a mile away from the house. The house was spacious and very well equipped and we were very well looked after by both Claire by email and the English speaking caretaker - who spoke amazingly good english. Lovely warm evenings sitting in the garden round a BBQ in a completely secluded environment with no noise of any sort to disturb the peace. Loved the cellar and had we been a bigger group, I'm sure we would have used it. Before we go next time I'm going to get back on the bike saddle to get some practice so that we can use the bikes. Loved the spa at Davod and possibly could have spent a whole week lying in the warm water relaxing - well my husband would have done had I not taken him hiking every day! . And for a Tesco lover - 24hr shopping available as well as a twice weekly market in the town. Loved our week there and will definitely return.
So glad that you had such an enjoyable time at the cottage and exploring the local area. You have been able to make the most of your time there. It's interesting to read the detail of the wildlife you spotted. Our caretaker will be happy to know you appreciated her help, thankyou very much. Yes, please do come back another time! I look forward to welcoming you again, and thank you for taking such care with the cottage.

"A relaxing rest and home away from home."
The cottage is beautiful and well cared for, the hosts make every effort to ensure you have all the facilities you need.
The location was wonderful, the town of Baja has fantastic markets selling lots of local produce and the locals are happy to help you. These types of markets are now considered ultra trendy in London, with people trying to evoke memories of a previous time of good service and local food but in Baja they are a tradition that has continued undisturbed.
Excellent local restaurants cater for a range of tastes for those special nights out.
If you want to explore then hiring bikes and cycling in the nearby Danube nature reserve was incredible, rare black cranes often sighted, along with all manner of flora and fauna. A real nature lovers paradise. Likewise walks are very easy to plan or a riverboat trip for those less able to get around.
All round good time had by all.
We are very happy to know that you enjoyed the features that make Baja such a delight, and that you found the cottage comfortable and welcoming.

We had a wonderful two week holiday in Baja. The accommodation and facilities were fabulous, it was a real home from home with every amenity. The owners could not have been more helpful from the moment we had booked. Baja is beautiful with plenty of activities to occupy all ages. We would recommend this apartment and area without hesitation.
It's good to know that you enjoyed your stay at our cottage in Baja and were able to discover some of the interesting features that makes the town a little gem.
