The Lazio region

North Lazio is an ancient part of Italy already lived in 30,000 years ago. It was inhabited also by the etruscans and the Romans. On the fall of the roman empire the area was invaded by the Goti and the Longobards. From that time all the castles were built at stratigical lookout points. Through this land passes the most important pilgrams way which went from Canterbury in England to Rome . This ancient way is called Via Francigena. which passed by Orvieto, Lake Bolsena, Montefiascone and Viterbo, all within 20 kms from Castel Cellesi . We have a mediterranean climate, with a warm summer and spring and a pleasant climate in the winter.

Bagnoregio

Bagnoregio is situated on a tufa base. It is surrounded by the 'Valley of the Calanchi' which have been produced by the atmosheric agentsIThe most famous part of Bagnoregio is Civita "the dying city" which is continually modified. Castel Cellesi is part of Bagnoregio founded during the 16th century by Marquise Cellesi who was in charge of the "feudo" of the Church of Rome. Castel Cellesi is a typical example of16th century agricultural town with a small square on which there is a church, the house of the nobleman and his land agent. In the bigger square are the houses built by the farmworkers. Their main products have always been olives and grapes for wine making In August there is the big festival where people eat in the square dinner cooked by the local villagers with live music and fireworks. Places to visit are Viterbo, Orvieto, Bagnaia (famous for its garden - villa Lante- Montefiascone, all within 20 Kms. Rome is 90 minutes by car and 60 mins by train (from Alviano railway station). Todi, Assisi, Spoleto and Perugia are within 1 hour. Florence is one an a half hours by car and two by train.

"The perfect antidote to the crowds in Rome"

The accommodation is spacious, very comfortable and well equipped. The setting is tranquil and picturesque. The owners Paulette and Vittorio are perfect hosts. They are generous, welcoming and helpful but not at all intrusive. There are many interesting places nearby to visit and we also managed day trips to Siena, Perugia and even Rome knowing that we would be returning to Il Melo to relax at the end of the day
