The Lazio region

VITERBO: Also known as the "City of Popes" (the ancient papal residence is the city's monumental symbol), Viterbo is well known for its thermal baths (Terme dei Papi and Terme del Bullicame). Surrounded by beautiful towns such as Ronciglione, Soriano nel Cimino, Vitorchiano and Vignanello, the city also boasts a large natural reserve called "Selva del Lamone".

Here are a select few:

May 1, San Pellegrino in Fiore, when all the town's stairways, arches, fountains and windowsills bloom, as the town is decked with plants and flowers. Various cultural activities are always scheduled alongside the botanical bonanza

September 3, a procession with the monumental "Macchina di Santa Rosa", carried by some 100 porters through the town. A festival is also held the following Sunday

August-September, Baroque Festival,

international festival with Baroque musicians from all over the world Second half of March, Fiera dell'Annunziata

Throughout the year, Antiques fairs (info: www. antiquarian viterbo.com)

ORVIETO: On a tufo cliff that has been mined by artists and archaeologists alike for centuries, Orvieto is a unique town. Home to the Albornoz Fort, the famous cathedral and its museum, San Patrizio's Well, the National Archeological Museum, the Museum of Medieval and Renaissance Majolica (ceramics), a renowned necropolis and so much more, Orvieto is also known for its "Strade del Vino" (wine roads), that meander through vineyards and cellars as well as cultural and historical sites. A walk through Orvieto promises jewels of ancient architecture, cobblestone alleyways, hidden stairways, tight passages and wide open spaces, all revealing the city's rich and varied history.

Here are a select few:

Spring

The "Palio dell'Oca" (goose race), during which Orvieto's neighborhoods reenact a medieval competition

Ascension Day, (40 days after Easter) the "Festa della Palombella", a tradition that has been

respected annually for over 600 years; and the Corpus Domini Procession, with 400 locals dressed in historically accurate costumes

October

"Orvieto con Gusto", annual outdoor fair offering the chance to taste local treats.

"Umbria Jazz Winter", the winter edition of the famous jazz festival, with musicians from all over the world

Every fourth Sunday of the month, under the Torre del Moro, a flea market for local artisans is held

Bagnoregio

CIVITA di BAGNOREGIO

A handful of homes stands on this fascinating hilltop, which dominates the valley below. In "upper Tuscia", between Viterbo and Orvieto, this ancient town has held on to its medieval air, seemingly unperturbed by the passage of time. Linked to the modern world by just one long and narrow bridge, the visitor can cross, on foot, to enter the town through Porta del Cassero, the only gate to the city still standing. The church in Piazzetta di San Domenico dates back to the eleventh century. From the edges of the town, the visitor has a stunning panoramic view of the region, famous for its "calanchi" - the cliffs of tufo created by centuries of erosion.

While Civita is a veritable oasis of peace and quiet, the Etruscan hilltop also offers a variety of events of interest throughout the year.

Here are a select few:

First Sunday in June and second Sunday in September, "La Tonna", a fair with a procession through Civita and a jockey-driven donkey race.

August, "Civit'arte", theater, dance and music performances (info: +39 0761 793231).

October, Chestnut Festival, with roasted chestnuts distributed around town.

December 26 / January 1 / January 6, crèche scene with over 50 actors, in costume.

More cultural events are held in the surrounding towns of Lubriano, Montefiascone, Celleno, Castiglione in Teverina, Civitella d'Agliano, Bolsena, Betriolo, Castel Cellesi...

Che dire? Bisogna esserci nei sogni per... Viverli! Location splendida, cortesia e pace la fanno da padroni, soltanto la costanza e l'amore di chi possiede e si prende cura in questo modo di una … More
