The Normandy / Orne region
The area is steeped in history with many towns dating back to the 11th century and beyond.
The rolling Normandy countryside is dotted with apple and pear orchards the fruits of which go to make local products, Cidre, Poire, Pommeau and, of course, Calvados. Most breweries are open for viewings and tastings. Other local products include cheeses such as Camenbert, Pont L'Eveque and Livarot and the famous biscuits from the Biscuiterie at Lonlay l'Abbaye.
For the art lovers, Claude Monet spent a lot of his youth in the countryside around Le Havre but the love of his life was Giverny where he spent the last, 40 or so, years of his life.
The famous Bayeux Tapestry (an embroidery measuring over 230 ft long) is to be found it the picturesque town of Bayeux.
The Normandy Landing Beaches and War Museums, and the magnificent Mont St Michel, and just into Brittany for oyster lovers, the restaurants at Cancale are not to be missed.

Guestbook for La Coulonge
Why not read for yourself what some of our guests have had to say about La Coulonge and then come and see for yourself and enjoy it as much as they did!
We stayed at La Coulonge for just shy of a week and absolutely loved it! The house itself is beautifully decorated and you can tell that the owner has put a lot of thought into making it not only look lovely, but also comfortable and full of all the little things a guest would need to make it a home away from home. We were provided with great directions, which made the house easy to find, and it is located in the beautiful and quiet Normandy countryside that is within easy driving distance of many visitor attractions. We loved it so much we are seriously considering purchasing a place in the area in the next few years! Brenna Wardrop, Canada
**** It was absolutely fabulous. Still enjoying some holiday glow, hope it lasts.Your place is amazing, thanks so much. We had horrible weather unfortunately, poured every day, and I mean poured. We had the weather from the UK that caused all the flooding. It was cool, so we did have to use the heater to take the chill. We read some books, had great nights sleep and teriffic food. Your cherry tree was full of fruit, we munched on a few. Everything went well, your restaurant tips and instructions were great. We hope to go back again someday, it was an amazing place. Pat MacDonald, Calgary, Canada
**** We are back in England after a wonderful time in Normandie - every day sunshine. Your cottage is wonderful, we had so much fun staying there. Thank you for your lovely note and the bottle of wine - we arrived about 6pm so we just took the wine into the garden and realised straight away this was going to be a wonderful holiday. I used your lovely recipe book for a couple of recipes - we all love cooking and your kitchen is very well equipped. I loved the central island for preparation and everyone drinking their wine and chatting. Great fun. Wish I was back there. Once again many thanks, Jackie Ward, England
**** We loved La Coulonge and got all excited about a buying a place out there..... as I'm sure so many other people do too! It was great having some things already in the kitchen - often we stay in places where you have to buy everything, this way you can use a bit of what's there already and leave things for others to use! David Owen, Calgary, Canada
**** Well, our stay at La Coulonge surpassed my expectations - You have an incredibly beautiful home in an inspiring setting. The house is extremely comfortable and your kitchen is wonderful - we had such a great time going to the markets and coming back to house to whip up a french feast! We went to St. Malo, (fantastic) Mont St. Michel, Juno Beach, Chateau Carrouges, Chateau Lassy, Alencon and just about every small town and boulangerie in between. We felt very fortunate to have all of those experiences and look forward to going back. Catherine & Bruce Owen, Calgary, Canada
**** We got back late last night and had a fantastic time, it was a long journey but was well worth it when we pulled up and got in the house.well what can i say? your house is stunning! we were all doing a little dance of celebration in your gorgeous kitchen for finding such a gem! It is definitely home from home and made for a perfect xmas. Thanks for all the help & advice and for letting out your lovely home.Happy New Year All the best - Tasha & family - Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Christmas 2008

What can we say! Our time at La Coulonge was superb, peaceful, tranquil, and all within 5 to 10 minutes drive to all services and facilities. We loved your kitchen and ate at the island every evening, having only used your beautiful dining room suite once. Your neighbours are very discreet but still managed to sneak over eggs and vegies at our kitchen door most mornings without being seen. We made a day trip to Paris by train, very easy and quick and were back at La Coulonge by 10 pm, a lovely day. So many things to see in the area though, chateaux, markets, vide greniers, brocantes, D Day landing beaches, Mont St Michel, two weeks weren't enough we need to go back. Again thank you for everything, especially the wine on arrival and the great directions and restaurant recommendations. T. Dodd, Calgary - April 2009 **** The feedback, we had a GREAT time. Do you have any availability in Sept? That's how much we loved it! Regards, P Paul, West Sussex - May 2009 **** La Coulonge was fab, we felt totally relaxed, your home has everything and more for self catering. Cheers, E. Ravenhill, Birmingham - June 2009 **** We both had a wonderful time in your lovely home, so relaxing! Thank you and we have already recommended La Coulonge to some friends. Hope to return in the near future. S. Phillips, England - July 2009 **** Directions and recommendations excellent. We have thoroughly enjoyed the peace and tranquility of your beautiful home. Visited most of the area - Domfront, Flers, Lassay Le Chateau (castle and tour guide excellent), Mont St Michel (truly impressive) and of course beautiful Bagnoles sur L'Orne which we seemed to visit nearly every day. J. Mccafferty, Scotland - July 2009 **** What a wonderful home you have it was simply stunning we could have stayed for ever and you have the most wonderful neighbours. We had a fab time both our teenage kids loved it and wanted to stay in France for ever. thank you again Shirley and Dave, Wiltshire - August 2009 **** We had a wonderul time and the babies both 18months shared the single room and loved it. Your house is wonderful and we had stunning weather. We would definitely love to holiday at your place again as we loved it. We definitely think you should take more photos as we had no idea how big and beautiful your home was. J. Cole, Norwich, Norfolk - August 2009 **** We had a really relaxing time in your lovely cottage, the nicest we have been in over many years of using gites throughout France. Would love to return but for a longer time. We had a nice time the previous week right in the centre of Bayeux, but La Coulonge was the "Icing on the cake". Until the next time, take care. P& J Rowntree, England - September 2009
