About the home

This newly renovated property, originally built in 1830, comes fully equipped, giving you that home away from home feeling.  The large kitchen with centre island which sits 8 is perfect for preparing holiday meals.   The lounge/dining room is a comfortable place to sit and while away a pleasant evening or two, should you choose to not watch the sunset.  The two ground floor large bedrooms (1 single, 1 twin) and the house bathroom with fullsize bath (with shower over), wash-hand basin and WC are all well appointed.  Upstairs, is the magnificent spacious master suite with Queen size bed and en suite bathroom with full size bath (with shower over) wash-hand basin and WC. Outside there is ample parking space, a gas bar b que, a stone terrace and a large garden with fruit and nut trees offering some shade from the sun.

The Normandy / Orne region

The area is steeped in history with many towns dating back to the 11th century and beyond.

The rolling Normandy countryside is dotted with apple and pear orchards the fruits of which go to make local products, Cidre, Poire, Pommeau and, of course, Calvados. Most breweries are open for viewings and tastings. Other local products include cheeses such as Camenbert, Pont L'Eveque and Livarot and the famous biscuits from the Biscuiterie at Lonlay l'Abbaye.

For the art lovers, Claude Monet spent a lot of his youth in the countryside around Le Havre but the love of his life was Giverny where he spent the last, 40 or so, years of his life.

The famous Bayeux Tapestry (an embroidery measuring over 230 ft long) is to be found it the picturesque town of Bayeux.

The Normandy Landing Beaches and War Museums, and the magnificent Mont St Michel, and just into Brittany for oyster lovers, the restaurants at Cancale, are not to be missed.

The Bagnoles de l'Orne / Geneslay area

La Coulonge is ideal for families who enjoy both a relaxing and a more active holiday. Close by you will find riding, golf, swimming, walking - countryside and forest, cycling, canoeing, there is also a nearby riverside picnic and kayak area . Bicycle rental information available. For those who would like a day's shopping or sight-seeing, Paris is just over a two hour train journey away.

The town of La Chapelle D'Andaine is less than 1 km from the villa, there you will find, supermarket (open Sunday morning, closed Monday), a bank, church, 2 boulangeries, florist, butcher, pubs, fine dining restaurant, tabac, wine/Calvados store, DIY store, Garden Centre, Doctor, Dentist, Pharmacy, etc....

Local attractions include the Belle époque thermal spa town of Bagnoles de l'Orne (5 minutes away), with its casino, cinema, theatre, auction house, shopping, antique shops, street cafes, fabulous restaurants, paddle boat on the lake, tree jumping adventure park, hikes in the forest of Andaines, velo-rails, outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, golf (9 very nice holes), miniature golf…and it's beautiful floral displays. Weekly markets Saturday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

The medieval town of Domfront (10 minutes away) also has lots to offer, narrow cobbled streets, tiny shops, the ruins of the chateau, the church of Notre Dame sur l'eau, where, it is said, Thomas a Beckett said mass in 1166. Weekly market Friday mornings.

La Ferte Mace, (5 minutes past Bagnoles de l'Orne) offers all amenities, including a huge supermarket, Leclerc, which opens through lunch time, you will also find a lakeside beach at La Ferte Mace, with children area, sandy beach, picnic area, snack bar, (follow signs that read Base de Loisirs). Weekly market, Thursday mornings.

“Fantastic house lovingly decorated !” We had a fabulous time at La Coulonge and the house was bigger than it appears in the photos. The master bedroom is enormous ! We took full advantage of the huge kitchen and congregated around it most evenings to sip wine and eat fresh bread and cheese ! The location was also great and we took advantage of the local area with several visits to Bagnoles de L'Orne which is a beautiful spa town. The children also enjoyed the lake and play area which was a short drive away. There are plenty of supermarkets close by also. Make sure you visit Mont St Michael - stunning !

“Stay at La Coulonge” Had a nice relaxing 3-week stay and La Coulonge. Accommodation is spacious, clean and comfortable with all amenties. It's in a lovely quiet setting close to some lovely French towns. Bagnoles-de-l'Orne nearby is an outstandinly beautiful spa town about 15 mins drive away. Normandy is a beutiful area to visit with lots of histroical towns to visit and the northern (channel) and western coasts are no more than 2 hours away.

“Home away from Home” Staying at this property made me feel like I was in the comfort of my own home, but in the great serenity of the countryside. Not having ever travelled to France it was the perfect place to stay to reach out to day trips to Le Havre, Hon Fleur, Juno Beach and Mont St.-Michel to name a few. I plan on returning with other friends and family to share in this great experience. Was surprised at the space available and the comfort and cleanliness of the property which offered all amenities that we needed. Lots of room for privacy and reading areas and a very homey kitchen and warming fireplace in the living room. The sounds and countryside ambiance available when you sit on the patio was a welcome addition to our journey.

We stayed at La Coulonge for just shy of a week and absolutely loved it!  The house itself is beautifully decorated and you can tell that the owner has put a lot of thought into making it not only look lovely, but also comfortable and full of all the little things a guest would need to make it a home away from home.  We were provided with great directions, which made the house easy to find, and it is located in the beautiful and quiet Normandy countryside that is within easy driving distance of many visitor attractions.We loved it so much we are seriously considering purchasing a place in the area in the next few years!

It was absolutely fabulous. Still enjoying some holiday glow, hope it lasts.Your place is amazing, thanks so much. We had horrible weather unfortunately, poured every day, and I mean poured.  We had the weather from the UK that caused all the flooding. It was cool, so we did have to use the heater to take the chill.  We read some books, had great nights sleep and teriffic food. Your cherry tree was full of fruit, we munched on a few. Everything went well, your restaurant tips and instructions were great. We hope to go back again someday, it was an amazing place.

Well, our stay at La Coulonge surpassed my expectations - You have an incredibly beautiful home in an inspiring setting. The house is extremely comfortable and your kitchen is wonderful - we had such a great time going to the markets and coming back to house to whip up a french feast! We went to St. Malo, (fantastic) Mont St. Michel, Juno Beach, Chateau Carrouges, Chateau Lassy, Alencon and just about every small town and boulangerie in between. What can we say! Our time at La Coulonge was superb, peaceful, tranquil, and all within 5 to 10 minutes drive to all services and facilities. We loved your kitchen and ate at the island every evening, having only used your beautiful dining room suite once. Your neighbours are very discreet but still managed to sneak over eggs and vegies at our kitchen door most mornings without being seen. We made a day trip to Paris by train, very easy and quick and were back at La Coulonge by 10 pm, a lovely day. So many things to see in the area though, chateaux, markets, vide greniers, brocantes, D Day landing beaches, Mont St Michel, two weeks weren't enough we need to go back. La Coulonge exceeded our expections and was great for two couples. The location allowed us to drive from Paris, about two hours and tour the Normandy region easily. We explored west to Mont St. Michel and as far north as the D Day beaches. La Coulonge was extremely well equipped for foodies to cook meals with great wine, music and ambience. Most staples were available. (Much appreciated!) It was located just outside a small village so we could buy fresh croissants each morning but were nestled quietly in our little enclave. It was very peaceful to return 'home' after a day of touring. Lots of good tips were provided about sights, bike rentals, restaurants, etc. Great food was so readily available we cooked in most evenings.

This sets the standard for all gite holidays! The cottage is well equipped and spotless in an idyllic location surrounded by farmland. We couldn't have chosen a more relaxed venue. The kitchen was stocked on our arrival with coffee, tea, spices, condiments, and a lovely bottle of wine which was very welcome after a long journey. Loads of info from the moment you make contact, everything is so easy. The house is even better than it looks in the photos, was spotlessly clean and the lawn was immaculate. A fantastic cottage which we will definitely recommend.

We had a wonderful, relaxing break at La Coulonge. It was everything we had hoped for and more. We did quite a bit of travelling while there - we went to Paris, travelled all round the local area, went to the war graves at Omaha Beach which was such a humbling experience and did a bit of retail therapy for the kids in Caen and Bayeux. The best thing was being able to return to La Coulonge and totally chill out. We will certainly return to your beautiful home. We found lots to do all around including canoeing from the base at Haleine, the tree-top adventure course, the velo-rail and the excellent cycleways on the old railways lines. What can I say, we absolutely loved your house. The care that has gone into setting up and keeping it is obvious and made it a joy to stay in. The minute we arrived we were regretting not staying longer.With the baby it's a bit hard to get out for dinner at night so we really enjoyed cooking up a couple of normandy feasts in your great kitchen. One the drive there we were lamenting that we hadn't brought any french cookery books so delighted to find a normandy cookbook in english waiting for us.

We had a wonderful holiday in your French home thank you. You have a lovely comfortable home which was probably the best house in France that we have stayed in. Was very impressed with the well stocked kitchen, comfy bed and power shower! It was a lovely place to spend our first holiday with our 3 month old daughter (also, thanks for the thick travel cot mattress!). Cannot think of any negative comments at all. We are thinking of coming back next year, it was a real home from home.

It was amazing - especially the garden and the kitchen. The pictures on the internet do not do the cottage justice - it was far bigger and amazing than what we thought it was going to be. The area of Normandy is lovely as well as steeped in history. We would certainly recommend the cottage and if we were back in Normandy would be pleased to book the cottage again.
