The Midi-Pyrenees region

Walking in the Pyrenees -

This region offers numerous walking opportunities with spectacular views in and around the 45,707-hectare Pyrenees National Park. There are beautiful mountain and woodland walks, which range from a quiet stroll around the lake at Payolle, to a serious trek around Chiroulet with 1000m of vertical ascent. Guides for local walks in each valley can also be arranged through the local tourist information and maps are available from shops in Bagnères-de-Bigorre or from other large map outlets, such as Stanfords in London. You can also enquire at any of the Valleys tourist information offices for more local advice on routes.

Where to Ski -

The Grand Tourmalet, the largest ski resort in the French Pyrenees, is only 30 minutes drive from Villa Tamerza and there are also 5 or 6 other smaller resorts within 1 hour's drive of the house, where you can enjoy fantastic snow conditions without the crowds often found in the Alps.

Cycling in the Pyrenees -

Every year the world's greatest cycling event - the Tour de France - visits the tough mountain climbs of the Pyrenees. Usually that includes one of the major Cols within spitting distance of Villa Tamerza. 2014 will see the Tour pass over the Col du Tourmalet , cycle routes to which can be enjoyed from Villa Tamerza.

The mountains lie to the south, west and east of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and there are countless well-known and less well-known cols to be tackled. To the north towards Tarbes or Pau, the countryside is much flatter, so the easier routes are in this direction. There are also lots of mountain bike trails.

Bagneres-de-Bigorre

Bagnères-de-Bigorre - A few minutes from the chalet, Bagnères is the regional centre and offers a good mix of cafes, shops, restaurants and bars, as well as a fabulous spa. The Saturday market is a great event with lots of local produce on sale. There is also a couple of museums and the tourist office can advise of local events happening during your stay.

Lourdes - 20 minutes drive from Villa Tamerza, this important Catholic pilgrimage site receives 5 million visitors and pilgrims each year. Use the funicular to access the Pic du Jer which offers panoramic views of the mountains and surrounding countryside.

Pau – Known as the gateway to the Pyrenees, this beautiful city enjoys a spectacular mountain backdrop. It offers many parks, shops, places to eat museums, and sights, including the Château de Pau, the fabulous Boulevard des Pyrénées and the (free) funicular railway connecting the lower and upper parts of the town.

Biarritz – Located on the Bay of Biscay, this luxurious seaside resort offers the opportunity of a day at the beach. About 2 hours by car from the chalet.

Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges – A member of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, this village comprises an 11th century cathedral, roman ruins, archaeological museum and town walls and can be reached in about an hour by car.

Mountain scenery -

Pic du Midi – Europe's highest observatory offering fantastic views of the mountains and plains is accessible by cable car from la Mongie. The summit visit also includes a museum and the site has a restaurant and gift shop.

Le Petit Train d'Artouste - Europe's highest train takes you through the mountains to the Lac d'Artouste, providing stunning panoramas en route. The whole trip takes about 4 hours and costs around 20 euros per person.

Pont d'Espagne – Located above the town of Cauterets in the Pyrenees National Park, the Pont d'Espagne is one of the "Grand Sites" of the Pyrenees. It is a protected area giving access to two major valleys with a series of walks which take in waterfalls, lakes and offer fantastic views.

Cirque de Gavarnie – A UNESCO world heritage site since 1997, the cirque is a high amphitheatre reaching 3248m at its highest point with a 400m waterfall which is the biggest in Europe. The nearby Cirque de Troumouse is also worth a visit as part of a full day trip.
