BookThe Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Deux Sevres region
The Deux Sevres is officially the second sunniest area in France after the Cote d'Azure ... but closer to the Channel coast!
From this area there is easy access to the fantastic Atlantic port of La Rochelle with its fabulous harbour surrounded by many excellent sea food restaurants, great shopping and Aquarium. The Ile de Re is also well worth a visit for beautiful unspoilt beaches and the chic and fashionable harbour towns of St Martin and La Flotte.
Visit the Marais Poitevin for lovely scenery and a gentle day of punting on the many canals.
Poitiers for historic and artistic interest, boutiques and the famous theme park for the moving image - Futuroscope.
There is a fantastic local market at Niort on Saturday morning which can be followed by lunch in one of the many restaurants and a visit to the Donjon or walk along the beautiful river.
Famous for Pineau des Charentes, the delightful aperitif; tastings are available at the many local producers.
The lovely town of Cognac is just under an hour away for an interesting day out and a tour around one of the many distilleries.
The Tumulus de Bourgon, 2000 years older than the Pyramids in Egypt, and its Neolithic Museum is just a few miles away.
The Bagnault area
Closer to home, Bagnault is a beautiful medieval village steeped in history, on the famous pilgrim route to Santiago De Compestello in Spain and guarded by the Knights Templar in medieval times.
Bagnault is also at the centre of the Route du Chabichou - a gastronomique route of 200 km devoted to goats cheese dairies, organic farms and producers.
There are countless walks and cycle tracks with a wealth of wildlife and nature to explore.
The area is delightful and well worth exploring. Bagnault and it's neighbouring village Exoudun has been awarded the status of "cite de caractere en Poitou-Charentes" only given to the most picturesque villages in the region.
La Mothe St Heray, 4km away, is a lovely town with a weekly market and many shops, bars and restaurants.

Booked this as a freind recommended it and i was not disappointed. La Petite Sojourn is a beautiful converted barnhouse in a small French village. Its a well maintained and looked after property. lots to do around place. The kids enjoyed the darts and table tennis table and days where spent lazing around the pool. Handy for local towns for shopping and all you need to cook is available in the kitchen. Nice big bed and twin beds in the bedroom suits any 2+2 family. we are looking at booking this years hol and will seriously be considering La Petite Sojourn. Thanks Steve and Faye for a lovely little find in deppest france |
