The Inland Andalucia / Jaen Province region
The province of Jaen has been described as the “green renaissance”: the world’s greatest man made forest that surrounds the majestic renaissance architecture which is the essence of Ubeda and Beaza (International Heritage Towns). Every village is doted with something to discover, something Arabic or something Romantic, a delightful balcony full of potted plants in full bloom, the fortified village of Iznatoraf situated on the peak of a mountain. Every town in the region is a place of interest!
The climate in general is dry and very healthy with the ever present sun and blue skies. The summer average around 35ºc, the winter hardly ever goes below 5ºc. The dryness makes the seasons very bearable. The green of the cultivated olive gives way to three natural parks to make up a well balanced holiday, one being Cazorla (Europe’s largest park). The parks offer skiing in winter, lakes and rivers to swim in the summer. What more can a visitor ask for? All this has given rise to the province of Jaen taking the name of“the inland paradise”
Baeza / Begijar area
The village, Begijar, is small with easy walks and cycling and with all the essentials; doctor, chemist, supermarket banks and various small shops and a Saturday market. It is famous for it’s church and Museum of Popular Arts.
Beaza – Ubeda are five minutes by car. They are internationally recognised for their Renascence architecture, which can not be bettered anywhere else in Europe. These two towns like the bigger towns of the region (Jaen, Linares and Andujar) have cultural programmes all year to entertain one whether it be flaminco music or dance, choirs etc. These events are complemented by two of Spain’s most famous restaurants among many others to choose from, cinemas, bars and discos.
The castles of Canena (Spa town) and Sabiote are about ten and twenty minutes away as is the capital of Jaen. The town of Jaen has a massive cathedral which houses the Paño de Veronica, Turkish baths, an excellent Naive Museum etc. Each town has a market and generally on different days.
Europe’s largest natural park is forty five minutes away: Cazorla. Also Sierra Magno, another natural park is close. A town famous for its “ghosts” is Belmez. Linares is renowned for its bull fighting obviously during the season and has a golf course, La Garza.
All the villages have their local holidays to celebrate their Saints Day which is an excuse to be out all night drinking, dancing etc. As you can see a week will go by in a flash!
The web sites of Ubeda and Baeza inform the vistor of the current festivales: easter, gastronomic, flaminco, classic theatre etc By the way, the best spanish Skiing is 1.5 hrs in Sierra Nevada above Granada.
