The Upper Austria/Salzkammergut region

The Salzkammergut is world famous for two things, Mozart and The Sound of Music and yet it is really so much more! Take a day trip to Salzburg and soak up the culture, visit Mozart’s birthplace, visit the castle and enjoy views over the rooftops of this amazing city or take a Sound of Music tour but why not explore a little further afield and discover some the “secrets” of the Salzkammergut:

IN SUMMER, the climate is warmer than in England and there is an almost unbelievable range of things to do and places to see. Here are just a few favourites:

• Visit Wolfgangsee, just a ten minute drive from the apartment, take a cruise, hire a boat, wakeboard or even take to pedalled or banana boats. Or simply, sunbathe and swim at the lakeside beach or explore the quaint villages and enjoy coffee and cakes in fabulous scenery.

• Climb every mountain – well maybe not them all! There are lots and there are cable cars and even trains to take you to the summit if walking is a bit too energetic!

• Visit Halstatt World Heritage site –home of the world’s oldest salt mine travelling by funicular, giant “mega slide” and mountain railway. This is a great day out!

• Visit one of the many smaller lakes that are within an easy drive of the apartment, or take a walk in the Alms – soak up the atmosphere of Austria.

IN WINTER the Salzkammergut becomes a winter wonderland, a skiers’ paradise. Within twenty minutes drive in almost any direction you will be at the slopes. There is something for everyone. Here is a small selection of our favourites:

• Freestylers’ paradise at the Dachstein Glacier – feell on top of the world at this challenging resort.
• Dachstein West a real favourite with Austrians and with groups who visit us. A wide range of runs from novice to black runs, great ski schools and crθche facilities for the kids.
• Post Alm – the second highest plateau in Europe and snow certain, this is a great place for families to learn together and play together in the fun arena

Bad Ischl area

Bad Ischl and its surrounding area is ideal for families and for groups of friends wanting to enjoy the great outdoors. A beautiful little spa- town surrounded by amazing scenery, with:

• Great walking/cycling tracks , well-signposted right on your doorstep.

• World famous patisserie and coffee house Zauners

• Kaiser Therme spa baths – relax and be pampered

• Kaiser Villa – the holiday home of Emperor Franz Joseph –he declared war on Serbia from here, which triggered the 1st world war.

• Swim in the water park or at one of the many nearby lakes

• Take in a concert, there is one most days and many are free

• Great eating out at affordable prices – try a traditional pork feast in a mountain Hutte or Wiener Schnitzel in one of the delightful restaurants.

• Enjoy coffee and cakes at one of the many pavement cafes.

• Chill out in one of the relaxed and stylish bars

In winter, Bad Ischl is the ideal base for a great skiing holiday. In the heart of the Dachstein-West Ski region, you are within 20 minutes or so from a number of fantastic resorts, which together offer something for literally everyone, whether you are an expert boarder looking for freestyle heaven, a family needing to please teenagers and tots, or just wanting to enjoy being in the snow, walking and taking in the scenery from the top of a mountain across the shimmering peaks towards the amazing sight of the Dacstein Glacier. A free ski- bus picks up close to Alpine- Meadows. Apres ski in Bad Ischl is low-key & the atmosphere is mellow with high quality places to eat at affordable prices, and a small selection of stylish bars.
FESTIVALS & SPECIAL EVENTS

Austrians love to celebrate, so throughout the year it seems as though there is always a festival within a few minutes drive of Alpine Meadows. Here are a few coming up in the next few months:

• Kaiser Fest- Bad Ischl has a red carpet right around the whole town and everyone is a Kaiser for the day. Music, food and a great party atmosphere.-August

• Sommer Nachts – 15 Minutes drive away at St Wolfgang, a big street party with music, food, a street market and activities for the children- monthly throughout the summer.

• Bauernherbst – Autumn Harvest celebrations – throughout the Autumn.

• Almfests - see the cows, garlanded with flowers return from their Summer pastures high in the mountains – October.

• Advent Markets in all the villages around the Wolfgangsee lake and also in Salzburg. A magical experience. Warming mugs of Gluhwein, local specialities for sale, Christmas music in the air - a perfect start to the festive season.
