The Upper Austria/Salzkammergut region

The Salzkammergut is a place to enjoy at leisure. No matter whether you are seeking relaxation and simply wish to unwind, or whether you would rather engage in something more energetic - you are sure to find what is right for you. Natural scenic beauty, friendly people, vibrant traditions, a rich cultural landscape and interesting sights are the ideal ingredients for the ultimate holiday experience.
The Bad Goisern area
WINTER.
During the winter months there is access to many ski resorts all within 20 mins drive, the largest of which is one of Austria’s best kept skiing secrets www.dachstein-west.at, which is great for intermediates, with limited access for beginners however ski school is available (my wife is a learner and was very impressed with the instructor's, also great for kids wanting to learn and was voted last year as one of the best ski resorts for families in Europe).
The other less well known resort near Bad Aussee is www.loser.at , www.tauplitz.at are not as big but still has some great skiing with excellent views of the Dachstein mountain range and a good ski hire and school available.
For the real ski expert the www.Krippenstein.at ski area (nr Obertraun) also 20 mins away has the best off piste skiing according to several ski commentators in Europe and a brand new cable car will be open for the 07/08 season.
For the more adventurous the international ski resorts of www.schladming.at, www.obertauren.at, www.badgastein.at and www.flachau.at are 1 hrs drive away with access to the third largest ski area in Europe www.skiamade.at. I have put some videos of the area on youtube under the resort name that I have taken when skiing there, check out 'sking in loser' and you can then look at the other videos I have done.
If you want a break from the skiing then visit Salzburg for the famous Christmas Markets or the ones held around the lakes in St Gilgen, St Wolfgang or Halstatt.
Summer
The area of Bad Goisern is transformed into a Mountain Bikers paradise and in July they host the world famous Salzkammergut Trophy (part of the World Mountain Biking Championships and the hardest circuit in the world). Hiking is excellent in the area with well marked out trails at the back of the hotel.
Places to visit
Halstatt - breathtaking village on edge of lake best to take train from Bad Goisern an approach by boat. Visit the salt mines and the local museum
Obertraun - lovely village located just on from Halstsatt must visit the Ice caves and Mammouth caves
Bad Isch - famous spa town must visit the thermal baths and swim outside, great for all those aches and pains
Gmunden - Traverse the wonderful Lake Traunsee on the way to this lovely lake side town
St Wolfgang- famous lake side town with wonderful mountain views and the famous cogwheel train up to top of local mountain where the views of the surronding Austrian lakes are simply breathtaking
St Gilgen - Pretty lakeside village home of Mozart's mother must get the cable car up amazing views of the lakes
Gosau - famous for the walk around the Goassue lakes and views of the Dachstein Mountain and glacier
Again check out the videos I have put on you tube of some of the above.

Guestbook for Dachstein view
We had a wonderful time, lovely scenery with a nice central location which made it easy to visit the main attractions of the Salzkammergut. Halstatt which is just 5 mins by car or get the train from the village and boat across the lake is stunning. Our grand parents will be back next year. Mr & Mrs S, Florence Italy
What a great location, wonderfully spacious apartment with great sunny balcony and so private. The food was excellent in the hotel and very reasonable. Also enjoyed eating in the many restaurants in and around Bad Goisern, Halstatt and Bad Ischl Mr & Mrs Jones, Cornwall, UK
