The Upper Austria/Salzkammergut region
The Salzkammergut is a popular choice in summer and winter. With major ski resorts, hiking trails and lakes, there is something for everyone. The local area has salt mines (very important in the history of the region - "salz" being German for "salt", this region was a major exporter of salt to around the world in the 16th, 17th and 18th century).
St. Wolfgang, Hallstadt, Fuschl, Bad Ischl and Salzburg are just a few towns located nearby. Daytrips to all of the above are highly recommended - perhaps catch a train to Hallstadt and get the boat across the lake, explore the saltmines and the beautiful waterfalls, followed by coffee and cake in the cafe on the lakefront.
In short; it's a beautiful area, with plenty to do!
Bad Goisern area
Bad Goisern is a village with many shops, bars and small attractions. Like many Austrian villages, the sense of community is apparent, and the locals are very friendly and welcoming. There are a few restaurants - try a "germknodel" - a large dumpling filled with plum jam - simply delicious! Washed down with the local beer, it's a real treat.
The local train station links to major cities: Salzburg, Vienna and Linz. Buses are frequent, cheap and are the perfect way to explore the area. All drivers and staff speak some degree of English.
How to get there
Nearest airport is Salzburg approx. 1.5 hour by car/coach. The 150 bus from Salzburg railway station leaves every hour and costs approx 10 Euros. You can also fly to Linz and catch a train (very scenic!) which takes approx 2 hours and costs 15 euros.
Salzburg and Linz are served by Ryanair from London Stansted.
NEW - Thomson Fly operate a daily service to Salzburg from Coventry and London Gatwick - return flights can cost as little as £40 including taxes!

Special interest holidays: Mountain biking excellent - major events are based in the village, with many competitors staying in the hotel.
