The Austrian Alps / Salzburgerland / Salzburgerland region
Province of Salzburg Salzburg is situated in the heart of Austria and offers easy access for culture, nature and sports lovers from everywhere in the world thanks to its road, train and flight connections.
In the city of Salzburg Visitors should visit the Mirabell Garden and Schloss Hellbrunn palace, and take a stroll through Getreidegasse, which used to be Salzburg´s main road. Mozart was born in Getreidegasse n° 9, which makes the house a popular attraction. Feste Hohensalzburg castle towers above the town as a symbol of power which was brought about the town thanks to its salt and silver mines.
Salzburgerland with its breathtaking views is the ideal place for relax holidays, or active sportbreaks. The summer is sunshiny with temperatures around 20c and winter is cold but sunny with plenty of kilometres of ski pists. (The linked skiing circuit "Amade" offers more than 860km of pistes, served by 270 lifts.)
There are 15 nature preserves in the Salzburgerland. One you should visit is the The Hohe Tauern national park; it extends across the provinces of Salzburg, Tirol and Carinthia. With an area of 1,800 km² it is the largest national park in Central Europe and in the entire Alpine region. The Hohe Tauern national park covers vast, alpine landscapes - glaciers, rock walls, glaciers, mountains streams and Alpine pastures. The diverse landscape offers a lot of opportunities to experience the natural beauty of the national park.
Bad Gastein area
In the midst of the Hohe Tauern National Park, Bad Gastein basks in fresh mountain air and a fog-free setting at 1,000 metres above sea level. Its very characteristic appearance, with beautiful buildings dating back to the "Belle Époque", blends harmoniously into its natural surroundings. This is a spa town of world renown with a very special flair: relaxation and recreation in pure mountain air, combined with an ideal high-altitude climate and Gastein’s thermal waters, guarantee you a vacation that is certain to exceed your highest expectations!
In Bad Gastein, you will find an optimal array of opportunities for a holiday together with family or friends, even if your interests happen to vary greatly. With a sensational selection of recreational and activity programmes, this particular holiday spot is lengths ahead of the field. Sports and recreational activities supplement the spa and wellness amenities at the world-famous springs and Healing Galleries of the Felsentherme.
Thanks to the location (2,700m above sea level) excellent snow conditions for snowboarding and carving are guaranteed from the end of November to late spring. This is pure skiing fun: most modern lift systems, alltogether more than 200km of perfectly groomed slopes - what are you waiting for?
Gastein is the perfect place to go cross-country skiing, which is known as one of the healthiest sports. It´s great to glide through the winter wonderland at your own speed, breathing crisp air. With its 90km of well-groomed trails Gastein is a paradise for cross-country skiers. Superb snow conditions are guaranteed until spring at 1,600m above sea level. The floodlit cross-country trail in Bad Gastein (hamlet Böckstein) is a special highlight. Thats why is rightly said that a Gastein’s winter paradise is so exceptional.
When the Gastein Valley is transformed into a summertime paradise, you will discover glorious hiking paths, attractive running and Nordic Walking trails, cycling and mountain-bike tours and more, both in and around the Hohe Tauern National Park.
For night owls, evening means it is time to head for the casino. And not to worry, "Rien ne va plus – no more bets" only indicates a very brief pause in the action! In Bad Gastein, the broad programme of special events promises to always keep you well entertained!
It is fair to say that Bad Gastein promises you a right-royal experience!
Do not forget to visit the famous waterfall in the centre of Bad Gastein and the The Gasteiner Heilstollen (curative tunnel):
Exactly 50 years ago the people from Gastein started - like they often did years ago - to dig for gold again.
In an altitude of 1,280m they dug a new tunnel into the mountain. The search for gold wasn´t successful but the bad luck for mining meant a big achievement for the health sector:
Geologists found out that at a certain depth in the tunnel the air and rock temperature rose to 44°C as well as the relative humidity. After intensive scientific research the Medical Department of the University of Innsbruck certified the therapeutic effect of the Gasteiner Stollen.
GOLF: Just Meters away and with perfect views from your balcony, is the Golf Club Gastein, founded in 1960, is one of the oldest and most traditional golf clubs in Austria. Occupying a fascinating position within the landscape, the fairways and greens blend harmoniously into the base of the Gastein mountains. A successful blend of both undulating and level fairways, long standing trees and small mountain streams make the course a challenge for players of all levels.
