Serra da Arrábida house + pool (farmhouse)

Home description

The house is set in about 4 acres of semi-wild garden, made up of cork trees, oaks, olive trees, pines and fruit trees. In terms of peace, it's great.

The house is simple – not luxury – decorated much in the style of the region.

It is divided into 3 floors; downstairs there's a kitchen/dining room, which gives onto an area shaded by olive trees where people inevitably eat in the Summer months. The kitchen is fully equipped and all-electric. On the floor above, there's the sitting room, the major bedroom and the bathroom (shower only). On the top floor, there’s a double and a twin bedroom and a small loo.

Just by the house there's a swimming pool (6 x 4 metres)... not Olympic, but perfect for cooling down (pool fenced and gated to control access to young children). There's also plenty of shade - terraces or olive trees. There's a BBQ too, naturally.

The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region

Azeitão is at the entrance to the Serra da Arrábida natural park -- a range of limestone hills rising to over 500 metres and which stretch for about 30 kms west from Palmela.

Azeitao is also the home of winemakers Jose Maria da Fonseca, producers of "Piriquita" red wine.

The house is less than 4kms from the nearest village, Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, where you will find a reasonable range of shops, a bakery, a bank, post office and supermarkets. It also has excellent wine cellars (which you can visit). Wine, cheeses and a kind of small Swiss roll ("tortas") are all specialities of the village.

Nearby, there are a number of places to visit and there are tours of the Serra da Arrábida, boat trips to see dolphins and lots of beaches (which can get pretty crowded in summer, but you can beat the crowds by getting there early - the house is 10kms by road from the nearest beaches).

For those who like to cook their own fish/seafood, buy from the markets in Setúbal or Sesimbra (although there’s usually excellent fish at the small market in Azeitão itself). Meat can be bought easily enough from the butcher or supermarket in the village.

Finally, for the golfers, there are two excellent championship golf courses (Quinta de Perú and Aroeira), as well as a lovely links course at Troia and another at Montado (see www.portugalgolf.pt).
