The Famagusta region
Once an area of scrubland on a narrow coastal plain between Cape Greco and Paralimni, Protaras is now a modern resort boasting some of the islands finest beaches. With a shoreline of brilliant blue sea, small sheltered sandy bays and rugged cliffs, both sun worshippers and watersports enthusiasts are catered for.
Perfect for beach lovers, the famous Fig Tree Bay with its clear turquoise sea and fine golden sand is understandably popular with both visitors and locals alike and only a stone's throw away. Situated between the Silver Sands Hotel and the Capo Bay Hotel, directly behind the waterfront taverna 'Anemos', all the resorts amenities are practically on your doorstep, so you can watch the generally sleepy resort centre come alive as day blends into night and the strip wakes up. Protaras offers a wide range of friendly restaurants, cosy tavernas, bars and shopping opportunities to suit the whole family.
Ayia Thekla is a newly developed area on the western edge of Ayia Napa. Just east of the beach is Ayia Thekla church and a collection of ancient tombs in the rocks. Just west of the beach is a beach bar where the weekly market is held year round every Wednesday. The main beach is a small horseshoe of soft sand with several rocky islands just a short way out. This is a more off the beaten track beach for those looking to get away from the main tourist beaches. For several miles west towards Potamos Liopetriou the Rocky shore line is interspersed with small private patches of golden sand, ideal for those looking for a quiet sunbathing spot. Ayia Thekla beach is generally a quiet beach but gets busier during peak season and national holidays when many of the nearby holiday villas are occupied with visitors.
Kite surfers and paragliders also use this area for practice and it is a popular spot for jogging and walking along the coast. In Spring the area is a riot of wildflowers and the coastline is very pretty. There are few other amenities in the Ayia Thekla area, besides a small mini-market and a fast food stand. A lot of the villas in the area are holiday rentals although there is a small resident population as well. Car hire is highly recommended to those staying in this area due to the few amenities within walking distance. The area is served by the hourly bus from Potamos Liopetriou (service 509) which runs through the centre of Ayia Napa before heading on to Paralimni village. A more regular bus service (service 101/102) is available more frequently from the waterpark at the eastern edge of Ayia Thekla.
