The Famagusta region
The Region of Famagusta has a great deal to offer, from the beach holiday to the cultural traveller, every taste is catered for. Ayia Napa is only 5km away, and the towns of Paralimni and Protaras are just a litttle further away with more shops, supermarkets and cafe's. Also close by are the red villages of Sotira, Liopetri and Frenaros, showing an insight into the life of Cypriots. Worth a visit is the Famagusta viewing point with its views across the green line into the unoccupied land that has laid bare and uninhabited since 1974, and it is true that you can still see people's washing on their lines as they were left when the invasion took place. Further afield is Larnaca, roughly 35 minutes drive away and a little over an hour from Carolyn villa is Nicosia with the hustle and bustle of Europe's only divided city.
AYIA THEKLA is only 7km away from AYIA NAPA (monsstery) and this quaint area is now a major tourist resort for Cyprus. Situated around the mediaeval monastery, dedicated to Lady of the Forests with plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.
There are a wide range of shops and entertainment for all age groups. Extremely popular is the tranquil harbour, lined with taverns and open air cafes. In Ayia Napa, there is also Water world extremely famous for its rides and attractions and situated next door there is go-karting should you feel like a real family day out.
In Ayia Thekla there are lovely fish restaurants at Potamos, an open air market, sports bar / cafe and shop.

"Great house in quiet location with great view of the sea with a great pool"
We stayed at the house in early April for 9 days when visiting Cyprus for my brothers wedding. It's in a quiet location but not far from Ayia Napa or the main routes to the rest of the Island. The house is open and airy and we felt at home as soon as we arrived. It is larger than the pictures suggest and easily accomodate 6 people.
There's a local shop about three quaters of a mile away so you can buy food and other essentials. If thats not enough you are only about 10mins drive from Aiya Napa if you want to sample the night life. So you are far enough away for a quiet holiday to relax but still close enough if you want to party and eat out in the many local restaurants.
There a couple of fish restaurants just 2mins down the road at Potamos on the river mouth, which are supplied daily by the fishermen who dock right outside. We obtained some fish from one of the locals and it made our week, as having access to a freshly caught fish for dinner can't be beaten. You can't get fresher than just caught. We also got some fantastic strawberrys from the local grower just the other side of the main highway.
Access to the rest of the island was easy too, as you are just off the main highway which has direct routes to Nicosia and Paphos directions.
So hiring a car is essential if you want to explore. Nowhere is more than a maximum of a couple of hours away. In our week time there week explored all of the island sights from Paphos to the mountains then a couple of days exploring the capital city.
I highly recommed staying here if you want a private place to stay which is far enough away from the madness of Ayia Napa but still close enough to be there in 10mins with a pool to relax and chill out.
