The Famagusta District
Geographically Agia Napa lies near Cape Greco at the eastern part of Cyprus, just south of Famagusta and forms part of the larger area known as Kokkinochoria (a name derived from the red colour of the soil). Ayia Napa, once a small fishing village, is as likely a resort as any in the Mediterranean. But historic sites, such as the 16th Century Venetian monastery lend character to a town that is best known for its colourful shops, taverns and discos. One focal point is the crescent-shaped harbour, crowded with brightly coloured fishing boats. The days catch is tonight's dinner at the popular restaurant s nearby. Life in this corner of Cyprus revolves around the sea, with water sports of all kinds readily available - from scuba diving to paragliding, discover golden sandy beaches and crystal clear waters or, explore the untamed beauty of Cape Greco and hike, bike or walk nature trail's or take a cruise around Ayia Napa's coastline.
Cyprus is the most easterly of the Mediterranean islands and as a consequence is the hottest. In summer it is very hot! The temperature starts to build up in May and by July and August it is up to 30'C (90'F) on the coast and quite a bit higher inland (over 38'C/100'F in Nicosia). There is very little chance of rain from June to September and rain in May and October is exceedingly unlikely. In the summer months only the lightest of clothing is needed, in the winter jackets or sweaters are needed at high or low altitude. Swimmers will be pleased to learn that the sea is warm from early June to the end of October!
Ayia Napa area
The most interesting sites in Agia Napa are:
The Little Harbour - It is in essence a fishing shelter. All life in the past was focused around the shelter which has now been extended, improved and slightly altered. Its branches from local limestone, the colourful boats, the fish taverns and its restaurants all still constitute an impressive picture.
Nissi Beach - The small isle from which evidently the beach obtained its name constitutes a challenge for exploration. Currents and waves exploit the weaknesses of the rock and continuously undermine it. They wear away the isle and the little points but simultaneously add to the width of the beach, setting up even a wall. It is this little wall, which connects the beach with the isle (known as tombolo) that constitutes the peculiarity of this area.
Caves and arches - The rock formations right next to the white sands of the beach, are very interesting. It is perhaps at the east of Ayia Napa that you come across the largest caves and grandest costal archways in Cyprus, right next to sheer cliffs.
Agia Napa Monastery - Undoubtedly, the monastery of Agia Napa is the most imposing cultural monument and the most interesting site of the settlement. It was here that the icon of the Virgin Mary was discovered and the cave turned into a site of worship for the locals. Another interesting feature within the confines of the monastery is the aqueduct, used to convey water from the north-east of the village. The most interesting feature of the courtyard however is the fountain, which includes an octagonal basin adorned with sculptured figures in bas-relief.
‘Thalassic’ Municipal Museum of the Sea in Ayia Napa - is dedicated to the enhancement, promotion and preservation of marine heritage in Cyprus, from prehistoric time, to present. Located at the centre of Agia Napa, the presence of the museum serves to display marine artefacts, conduct educational programmes and community cultural events, as well as foster interest in Cyprus' rich sea-history.
Municipal Museum of Marine Life - is the first of its kind in Cyprus, housing shells as well as other specimens of Cyprus' marine life. The museum exhibits shells from various parts of Cyprus, turtles which periodically visit the island, and birds endemic to the island as well as marine migratory birds.
Communal Stadium - The stadium of Agia Napa, with a capacity of 1000 spectators, caters for football and athletics.
Makronisos Tombs -About 5km west of Agia Napa the visitor encounters an entirely new tourist corner, known as Makronisos - meaning literally - "long island". Makronisos, however is not an island! It has joined up with the main land in such a way that the visor cannot discern the original island. Nineteen tombs have been excavated to date together with a small sanctuary to the east of the burial grounds and part of an ancient quarry adjacent to the cemetery.
The Farm House - visit the tradition Farm House in the Monastery Square - the Farm House symbolises the nostalgic rural traditions of Agia Napa’s past in authentic reconstruction. Agia Thekla Chapel - About 7km west of Agia Napa - a white washed modern chapel dedicated to Agia Thekla It is located on a hummock, a few metres from the seashore - dominating the surrounding area.
Water Park - The Agia Napa Water Park offers a whole range of water park slides, pools and adventure. Water-Park offers a full days entertainment for the price of admission.
Potamos (Liopetri) - is only 11kn west of Agia Napa, and is situated in an idyllic place which is claimed by two villages Liopetri and Xylofagou - simply because it lies exactly between the two. Potamos, with its colour and beauty, is a constant inspiration to artists and writers, and seduces a large number of visitors every year, and through its uniqueness adds more variety to an already rich and varied Cypriot scenery.
Gkreko National Forest Park - A national forest park - comp an area of about 385 hectares has been established within the state land of Gkreko, within the entire national forest park area three car parks have been set up as well as a pavilion and other facilities near Konnos bay. The national forest park of Gkreko provides entertainment, recreation and scientific knowledge, within the park lie the ruins of the ancient temple of Aphrodite, the picturesque chapel of Agioi Anargyroi and an impressive cave where a service is performed once a year.
Konnos - A winding earthen road north-west of Cape Greko leads to a bewitching isolated cove known as Konnos. Huge limestone rocks have been thrown into the sea, limiting the little beach and at the same time, lending a peculiar wildness to the scenery.
