The Famagusta District
t's hard to believe that only 20 years ago Ayia Napa was a sleepy fishing village with a population of 200. Named after a small church located in the centre of the village, Saint Panayia, meaning Mother of Christ, the village was transformed into a tourist resort after the invasion of Famagusta in 1974 which resulted in a huge loss of tourism for the island.
Contrary to popular belief, this cosmopolitan town isn't just a vast collection of pubs and clubs for the 18 to 30 crowd. In fact, there's something for everyone in this once sleepy fishing village. White sandy beaches set between un-spoilt coastal paths are the main attraction of this beautiful stretch of coastline and shallow turquoise waters provide a perfect setting for beach lovers.
The appeal of Ayia Napa is simply that it has so much to offer. Long stretches of sandy white beaches, hundreds of fantastic bars and restaurants and a multitude of attractions and activities for both day and night guarantee a fun-filled holiday for visitors of all ages.
Ayia Napa has easy access to the towns of Paralimni and Deryneia, and the resorts of Protaras, Pernera and Kapparis. Although Ayia Napa has supermarkets, restaurants and bars, we feel that a car is really essential for maximum pleasure.
Beaches in the Area
This beach lies west of Cape Greko. Its secluded golden sandy beach, matches perfectly with the blend of blue from the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean sea and the blue backdrop of the sky. Between Kermia Beach and Nissi beach you will find lots of little sandy coves including Ammos tou Kambouri, Gliki Nero, Pantachou, Loukkos tou Manti, Katsarka, Pernera and Vathia Gonia.
Nissi Beach - AyiaNapa
Nissi has fine white sand and lovely clear waters to bathe in. It is a popular beach in the main season with the 'younger' tourist. You can hire sun-loungers, umbrellas and enjoy the sun, sea and sand.
Nissi Bay Beach (Sandy Bay) - AyiaNapa
Approximately 400m west of Nissi Beach area you will find Sandy Bay which is popular with families.
Landa Beach (Golden Bay Beach) - AyiaNapa
This beach is located halfway between Nissi Bay Beach and Makronisos Beach, just a half kilometre walk from either. So, if Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa is just too busy to contemplate, head for Landa Beach instead. Landa Beach is 400 metres of golden sand and calm seas, a perfect place to chill out and relax after a hard night enjoying Ayia Napa's nightlife.
Macronisos Beach - AyiaNapa
This beach is located just off the Nissi Avenue, in Ayia Napa. This is a quality, blue flag beach that is formed from a cluster of 3 bays. The sand is wonderfully thick and soft. A tractor with a plough treats the sand at the end of the day. It is a very popular and busy beach with its own diving school, if you fancy some scuba.
Ayia Thekla Beach - AyiaNapa
Located three kilometres west of Agia Napa, Agia Thekla is a small beach named after a tiny old church situated nearby. The beach is 300 metres long and 25 metres wide and covered with fine golden sand. Seas are calm. The beach is within walking distance from the main road leading to Agia Napa and is accessible by car, motorbike and bicycle as well as on foot.
Nissi beach, is a well-known sandy beach in the resort of Ayia Napa, Cyprus. The sandy beach stretches for 500m and the waters are clean enough for the beach to have been awarded blue flag designation. The beach which runs the length of its own cove, takes its name from the small islet (Nissi) located close to the coast. The uninhabited islet is easily reached on foot through the shallow waters and its location provides a good shelter for the rest of the beach. The islet is covered with low level local vegetation.
Nissi beach has become a popular destination for clubbers following live programs transmitted throughout the summersince 2002Water sports such as water-skiing, windsurfing and pedal boating are available and so are two bungee jump services. There are also two beach volley courts open to the public. In 2005, archaeological excavations along the western borders of the bay have revealed evidence of fire lighting equipment dating back 12,000 years indicating that the area could have been settled by the first humans on the island.
Nissi beach is one of the most special beaches in Ayia Napa, with its destictive fine white sands and amazing clear torquise waters. There is a small Island at the beach, which is connected to the shore by a sandy path. The beach is particularly popular with young people and singles as it offers various entertainment activities.
