The Swiss Alps / Valais/Swiss Alps region
AYER, VAL D'ANNIVIERS, VALAIS, SWITZERLAND. Your destination is Ayer, a most charming village in the picturesque valley of the Val d’Anniviers, in the Swiss canton of Valais.
Switzerland is a contrast of mountains, lakes and cities; it is divided into a federation of cantons, each of which has considerable autonomy. The Canton of Valais is predominantly mountainous. The high ground is a refuge from the summer heat that is normal in France and Italy; in winter the Alps are a playground for the active and adventurous.
Apart from the weather, the spectacular landscape, the local culture, the flora and the fauna makes Valais and Ayer, in particular, an exceptional holiday destination.
Ayer area
VAL D’ANNNIVIERS: HOLIDAY IN PARADISE IN SUMMER OR WINTER.
The "Val d’Anniviers" is an unspoilt valley that leads into the heart of the Alps that form the border between Switzerland and Italy. The valley has numerous farming villages, the most idyllic of which is Ayer, and is surrounded by the 'Imperial Crown' - five mountains over 4000m, including the Matterhorn; this is Heidi country, as suitable for a summer holiday as winter.
SUMMER Walking, cycling/mountain biking, paragliding, mini golf, bungee jumping (www.bungy.ch), cayoning, mountaineering, tennis, visits to a copper mine, stargazing at the observatory and an aerial adventure park are some of the activities available. Anywhere in the valley you will find a wide range of refuges and restaurants, which make rewarding destinations, alternatively meander through the alpine pastures and the charming villages. Those needing a challenge can prepare for the Walkers' Haute Route or the demanding Sierre Zinal marathon.
WINTER Three ski areas suitable for beginners, intermediate and experts alike. Lifts to 2900 meters; over 225 kms (140 miles) of uncrowded piste, monitored snowfields, fun parks and limitless off piste. Caters for skiers (downhill, ski-touring, kite skiing or cross-country), snowboarders, snowshoe walkers or tobogganers. Services in the resorts include mountain guides, ski schools, kindergartens, ski hire, shops, bars, swimming pool, saunas, massages, skating rink, nightclub and restaurants.
The principal town in the valley is Vissoie and the three resorts are: Zinal, Grimentz, and St Luc/Chandolin. Ayer is central to these resorts, which can be reached by car in 10 minutes. All resorts in the Val d’Anniviers are covered by the same lift pass and accessible by bus. The lift pass is good value, for example, CHF 235 for six days for an adult; full details of reductions for children and those over 65 can be requested from their website.
FURTHER AFIELD Should you want to explore further afield from Ayer, the attractive towns of Sierre and Sion lie at the base of Val d’Anniviers in Rhone River valley. The area is well known for its wine, spa towns and castles. Golf is available at Crans sur Sierre the home of the Omega European Masters. Crans Montana, the Verbier ski area and Zermatt are close enough to day-ski or to visit. Tourist info 0041 27 475 1370.
