Occupies an elevated position on the edge of a well-maintained and gated residential area on the banks of the River Guadiana, at the southern border between Spain and Portugal. Access is by self-drive car from Faro, or southern Spanish airports, of which Seville is closest. Some of the homes locally are occupied all year, others, like ours, are holiday homes. Complementing its own spacious outdoor areas is the shared garden with 2 pools and relaxing area.

We have refurbished and furnished the house with adults in mind, and to a most comfortable standard. Air-conditioned/heated, well furnished, indoors and out. Locally, there are walks, rambles, and a wide choice of golf-courses. Bird-watching, fishing and water-based sports are also local, though to get anywhere, you really need to have access to a car. With a car, you are free to explore the kilometres of wide open countryside around, in this fruit-growing region. Ayamonte, just 5km away, is a vibrant and colourful, working border town and fishing port, with restaurants. Isla Canela beach is closest. On the Spanish Algarve, 10 minutes from beaches, like Isla Canela, Manta Rota, with on-site golf and easy access to numerous courses in Spain and Portugal. Enjoy both cultures and cuisines.

The Andalucia region

Sometimes known as the Spanish Algarve, we think that this region offers a taste of real Spain, and the chance to explore the Portuguese Algarve, right next door. Year-round sunshine and a breeze are features of the climate, though we cannot guarantee sunshine every single day of the year, it can rain, but rarely does in the summer. Max temperatures in the mid 30s celsius. Lovely sandy beaches, long navigable river, the border between Spain & Portugal, and interesting border towns and ancient fortresses on both sides.

Fishing, fruit growing and tourism, though the tourists tend not to come in their hoardes, especially quiet outside July and August, when the Spanish are on holiday.

Lots of protected countryside and national parks, salt marshes, towards the coast and forest areas in the hinterland.

Huelva is the main administrative centre and other towns offer shopping and places to visit.

Ayamonte

Ayamonte is a town and municipality located in the province of Huelva, Spain. According to the 2005 census, the city has a population of 18,001 inhabitants. It is about 5 km by road from our house and easy to drive to.

Location and history

The township of Ayamonte preserves its old medieval quarter in the central district of the town, with many very narrow streets and historical buildings; this central area is a designated car-free zone. Great for wandering round the shops and stopping for coffee or tapas on one of the highly decorated town squares.

For centuries the ferry link between Ayamonte and Vila Real de Santo António was the traditional crossing point between Spain and Portugal. A modern bridge over the Guadiana River has now been built to the north of the town, linking the motorway systems of the two countries, but the ferry still runs and provides an inexpensive mode of transport between the two countries. NOTE: the bridge is free to use, has 2 lanes each way and is part of the motorway, so you cannot stop on the bridge, although it affords fabulous river views, as you cross.

The beach area of Ayamonte is Isla Canela, and is reached by a causeway across the Marismas del Guadiana; the marismas (salt marshes) are an important wildlife reserve, providing a home to many waterfowl, including herons and flamingos. Isla Canela is built along several kilometers of sandy beaches, and provides an ideal area for windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing. There are a number of quality golf courses in and around the area, including one built into the Marismas itself.

"Fabulous house with everything you need for a perfect holiday!"

We had a great 3 week stay in costa esuri! House is a home from home and in such a beautiful location. Pity the golf club is closed now though as kids loved a trip down there to the driving range!… More

"Sunny, brilliant relaxing Break in fantastic location, bringing in a real authentic Spanish and Portuguese experience."

This holiday home was very beautiful, well kept, and in a great location and setting. We enjoyed every minute of our stay and felt very comfortable. We were very lucky with fantastic weather during our holiday and our children enjoyed their time in the pools and grounds which were all kept in great condition. During our stay we had some great days out to places such as Seville and also went into Portugal to visit the Zoo Marina Park where we saw a brilliant Dolphin show along with seeing Sea Lions and African & Birds of Prey which we all really enjoyed, especially the children who had some pictures taken with the dolphins and birds. We also had a couple of days out to the beautiful local beaches on both the Spanish and Portuguese coastlines. In addition to these days out when we weren't relaxing at the wonderful holiday home we also had a few trips into the local town Ayanmonte just down the road which is also a really lovely place to visit and dine in the local restaurants and look around the local shops. My father-in-law and I also managed to squeeze in a couple of rounds of Golf at the two courses we were recommended by the holiday home owners, one of which at Local Costa Esuri Course just down the road which I really enjoyed (Especially as I won!)
I would always recommend hiring a car for your stay if staying at this location so you can get out and experience at your own leisure the great sites and places to see whilst staying at this truly great location.

"Ticked all the boxes"

The house is perfect - very well-equipped, comfortable, sunny yet cool. You wouldn't know you were on a complex - very peaceful and private. We loved the terraces, the easily accessible pool and the spacious interior. Ayamonte is delightfully Spanish - good restaurants, fresh food and Portugal just across the river. A really relaxing holiday destination.
