The area is well served with many good restaurants, including Hix Oyster Bar in Lyme Regis, as well as numerous inns serving locally produced food and freshly caught fish.
Within easy driving distance are the historic towns of Dorchester and Exeter, and numerous stately homes and gardens- Killerton, Montecute, Forde Abbey, Powderham Castle, to name but a few. Other attractions in the area include the Swannery at Abbotsbury and Chesil Beach, as well as many attractive coastal towns and villages - including Bridport, Burton Bradstock, Charmouth, Lyme Regis, Sidmouth, and Seaton with its tramway taking you up the Axe Valley . Further along the coast are the pretty coastal villages of Beer and Branscombe, and inland to Ottery-St-Mary and Honiton- a haven for antique collectors. The South West coast path provides both easy strolls and challenging hikes and there are numerous local walks to be taken straight from the cottage door. A little further afield, but still good for a full day out, is the wild scenery of both Dartmoor and Exmoor. The Devon region
The West Country counties of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset provide the perfect location for all sorts of activities with wonderful beaches, dramatic coastal scenery, lush rolling hills and wooded valleys, as well as picturesque villages and historic towns.
Woodstock Cottage in East Devon, is near the borders of Somerset and Dorset, so is well situated to explore the whole of the area. With the Blackdown Hills to the north and Lyme Bay to the south, much of the countryside is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the nearby Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site. The Southwest Coast Path runs throughout the area, so there is a good mix of challenging walks or gentle strolls. The dramatic coastal scenery is a haven for fossil hunters, and more recently the golden cliffs at West Bay have become the setting for the popular TV series " Broadchurch" !
Woodstock Cottage is just a mile from the village of Chardstock and 3 miles from Axminster which is famous as the home of Axminster carpets which have been manufactured here since the 18th century. The town has a good range of eating, shopping and leisure facilities , with a market in the town square every Thursday. TV chef, Hugh Fearnley- Whittingstall has recently opened the River Cottage Stores and Canteen in the town, and the River Cottage HQ, Park Farm, where there are many interesting courses and events held, is close by. There are numerous good pubs and restaurants in the area serving locally produced food, including Mark Hix's Oyster Bar in Lyme Regis.
There are several excellent farm shops in the area as well as weekly street markets in Axminster, Honiton and Bridport, so you can stock up on local fresh produce, or buy fresh fish straight off the boats at Beer and Lyme Regis.
The area is perfect spot for walking either on the coast path or exploring the countryside and villages. Golf, horseriding and sea-fishing are also available nearby. There are a number of National Trust properties close by as well as many other historic houses and gardens to visit.

"Excellent Cottage and Location"
The three of us thoroughly enjoyed a short break to Woodstock Cottage leading up to Easter. Superb cottage, very relaxing and comfortable. Perfect location a few miles from Axminster and easy access to Lyme Regis and the Lyme Bay Coast and more. Roger and Mary made us very welcome. We wish we had stayed longer. Thanks and hope to stay again soon.

"Wonderful people wonderful place"
If you are staying in and around Axminster this is definetly the place to stay. The owners Mary and roger couldn't be more helpful or friendly. The cottage itself is lovely and set with a view that is equally as lovely! Thank you Mary and roger can't wait to see you next time.

"Excellent stay in picturesque East Devon"
My husband and I had the perfect break in Woodstock Cottage. It is a roomy, very clean and well-equipped cottage. The kitchen and bathroom are of a very high standard. We didn't miss a dishwasher as we were only two. Every morning we enjoyed breakfast watching numerous birds gorging themselves at the feeder in the back of the garden. Returning after a nice day out we warmed up by the cosy fireplace. We were spoilt by Roger who had filled the wood/coal stove each night. I read two of the books that were available. We also watched one of the DVDs. Woodstock cottage is situated in the middle of the countryside about 12 miles away from the Jurassic Coast, so it is ideally located. Mary and Roger provide you with lots of tips to explore the surroundings. Highly recommended!

"Fantastic Christmas two years in a row!"
Myself, my husband and 2 year old have stayed at Woodstock for Christmas two years in a row now. We have family over for Christmas and Boxing Day lunch and there is plenty of room. Mary and Roger are perfect hosts and very generous when it comes to extra little luxuries! The cottage is very clean and has everything you need (except a dishwasher). Highly recommend a visit, except next Christmas!

"Great place to stay."
Just stayed for a week at Woodstock Cottage. Very nice spacious accommodation recently refurbished to a very high standard. Very quiet rural location so be prepared for a few narrow roads. Very friendly and welcoming owners.
Just the two of us, but accommodation will easily take 4 plus baby in cot provided.
Very good signal for free WiFi.
Will stay there again and would recommend others to stay.

"excellant location for viewing area"
Stayed for 5 nights, the accommodation is immaculately clean and maintained to a high standard.. the hosts make you feel very welcome with biscuits and milk to make tea on arrival and lots of helpful information on places to visit; a meal at the river cafe canteen is highly recommended.
The bathroom and kitchen are well equipped with all you require and it's nice that the little essentials are there to help you ie, showere gel, washing up liquid etc, we unfortunately had bad weather but undetered we braved the elements every day, only to get soaked most days; the facillities here though heped us to dry off, wash clothes and start again!!!!
Would highly recommend woodstock, thanks again for a lovely stay.

"Welcoming, peaceful, spacious rural retreat"
We stayed after the easter weekend for a midweek break with my wife and our two daughters 11 & 14. The cottage was very well received - very clean and perfectly laid out for our family. The mezzanine bedroom was quickly bagged by the girls which had lovely views of the countryside through the velux window.
The owners were very warm and welcoming - Mary & Roger the perfect couple
Location is superb for anyone wanting to explore the jurassic coast with Axminster a few miles away with River Cottage canteen taking prime position & Lyme Regis - a super, pretty seaside village (in between heavy showers for us) and Beer, nearby an even more quaint fishing village.
All in all a perfect break for us even in very iffy weather, but who cares about the weather with pretty, clean comfortable surroundings

"Could have stayed much much longer"
Everything about the house was fantastic, spacious, comfortable, clean. The house was well equipped with all you could possibly need and I'm sure if there was something missing Roger and Mary would do their very best to get it for you.
The location is perfect for the fabulous coast, walking, pretty villages and a trip to the River Cottage canteen should you wish it.
We hope it won't be too long before we can return.

"A lovely peaceful place, in a convenient location"
We had a great long weekend stay at Woodstock Cottage. The cottage is lovely, cosy and we really appreciated the little 'added extras' and thought that went into our stay. There are some great views from the cottage and the garden to enjoy and the location is perfect. Roger and Mary were great hosts and we would recommend the cottage to anyone.

"Superb rural location, cosy, comfortable accomodation"
We spent a wonderful week at Woodstock Cottage which is close to Axminster in Devon. We were on a working break and the internet access allowed us to get everything done that we would have in London in a more relaxed environment. We visited local seaside towns and the Hix restaurant in Lyme Regis. I can also recommend the local pub The George for food, was delicious. The cottage offered a comfortable bed and a cosy environment for relaxing. Was clearly well looked after and Roger and Mary were very helpful and made us feel most welcome.
