Home description
A lovely, spacious house in fabulous mountain scenery beside a river. A cooling dip; a siesta in the shadow of a mysterious Cathar castle; exceptional local wine; award-winning restaurants. The house is tastefully furnished and well-equipped with easy-going comfort and relaxation high on the agenda. It's a stylish home with oak floors and many original features. Some bedrooms boast the lofted ceilings of the French "Maison de Maitre" style of luxury; in high summer, the house retains a cool interior as a contrast to the hot Pyrenean climate.
Perfect for walking holidays and for birdwatching. There are miles of footpaths which range from short, easy walks to testing ascents to the tops of mountains with spectacular views. For the more adventurous, climbing, caving and river rafting are available locally. Golden eagles and dipper; orchids; izard; butterflies; - all seen in or from the garden.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
The Pyrenees. One of the most beautiful locations on the planet. Mile after mile of unspoilt mountain scenery merge into acres of vineyards as you move closer to the Med at Perpignan, where chic shops are found in profusion. The medieval city of Carcassonne is a wonderful sight, as are the 11th century Cathar castles in the region. Sample some of the best Cotes de Roussillon, Corbieres and Maury wines, along with Catalan cuisine. Summer weather is invariably hot, with average maximum temperatures of around 32. The climate is usually dry, although welcome storms occasionally break the heat. May, June and early July are a little cooler than high summer and the roadsides and meadows are awash with wild flowers.
Axat / Puilaurens area
Cathar castles, mysterious places of religious persecution, peer down from peaks, hinting that you're in Da Vinci Code country. Forest and hill walks for all ages and abilities take you through spectacular gorges to high pastures and peaks, passing bank upon bank of beautiful wild flowers. The River Aude provides water rafting; the town of Quillan presents a range of concerts (from jazz to classical) along with its annual International Folk Festival, where you can sample the music and dancing of countries from around the globe. The town of Axat, full of character, has a full range of shops and services.
How to get there
45- 50 minutes from Perpignan and Carcassonne airports off the D117 near Axat. Car hire (Hertz, Europcar, Avis, etc) available in the airports. Turn onto the D22 in Puilaurens Lapradelle. The house is 2.5km on the left. If you don't want to hire a car, there's a bus service from Perpignan airport to Lapradelle. The bus stop's about 2k from the house.

Guestbook for La Folie
An amazing place. Beautiful house and surrounding area. Highly recommended. The walks were fantastic - so many and all different. The maps you keep are very helpful. We'll be back. Tranquil and relaxing. Lots of sun - how do you do that?! Great birding! 3 types of eagle and 2 vultures just from the garden.
