Le Farat
£600–£960 / week
About the home
Nestled in its own little valley, Le Farat is Minutes from Auvillar in the Tarn et Garonne (dept 82), as yet a relatively un-discovered corner of Gascony in South West France. It is renowned for its beautiful villages, stunning scenery, châteaux, fresh fruit, wine, Armagnac, foie gras, Agen prunes and much more. Just two hours South East of Bordeaux, under an hour from Toulouse and 7 hours from St Malo, it has easy road, rail and air access and is an area full of great things to explore and enjoy.
Situated on the route de Saint Jacques de Compostelle ("Way of Saint James! the famous pilgrims walking route to Lourdes and on into Spain) our home is a beautiful stone farmhouse with outbuildings including a stone pigeonnier full of character, which was converted into a two bedroom/bathroom gite/cottage in 2010.
The large 6mx12m salt water pool is surrounded by a lovely stone wall sheltering it from any wind and it is also gated for security and the safety of young children. (Shared only by possible B&B guests)
For those who want to burn off some excess energy or escape from the midday heat we have added a games room converted from an old stone barn. It has a full size table tennis table, professional table football, large air hockey table and dartboard, as well as a fridge, stepping machine and a seating area. For the younger members of the family there is a large trampoline and garden games available, including badminton, croquet and rounders. We also have a number of fully serviced bikes to hire if you prefer to explore the area under your own steam.
The gardens are mainly laid to lawn and are perfect for strolling around in the warm evening sunshine contemplating the activities for the following day, of course a glass of wine to aid in your decision making is a must!
The large purpose built BBQ area adjoining the pool house has a vine covered terrace overlooking the lake with valley views beyond. Subtle lighting and lanterns adorn this little enclave. Mixed with the warm evening air and the sound of lapping water from the pool, it creates a perfect ambiance for that alfresco experience that you crave all winter for!
Fishing in our private lake is a great way to introduce the children to a new sport. We have both rods and poles for hire and as the lake is teaming with lots of small and medium sized fish - on the first drop of the line you are almost guaranteed to get a nibble!
Auvillar itself, listed as one of the prettiest villages in France, has both Mediaeval and Roman origins with cobbled streets, an unusual covered circular corn exchange and stunning views. The market is still used today as a focal point for village life and a weekly farmers market. The village has a butcher, a baker a corner shop, tea shops restaurants, a museum and tourist office, all the amenities you will need for your holiday.
Apart from the obvious tourist attractions there are lots of other things to keep you occupied, for example fishing (on site as well as in the river Garonne), golf, horse riding, sailing and windsurfing, wine tasting, walking, cycling etc. ..
For those looking for a more modern approach to their holiday there is a large shopping town, a theme park with roller-coasters and a great go-karting track within half an hour! What more could you want.........oh yes the weather, guess what, you've got that too!

Opened for rental in July 2010 this pretty stone cottage is finished to a high standard with luxury soft furnishings and antique effects.
The bedrooms are both approximately 5mx8m with vaulted beamed ceilings and rustic original oak doors. The superking sized double bed unzips to make two singles if required. As well as the twin beds in bedroom 2 each room has its own sofa bed, that sleep two adults comfortably. Large en suites contain a white bathroom suite housing a bath with shower head facility, a separate large shower, sink and bidet with a separate toilet.
This gite is designed in such a way that it can be easily split into a one bedroomed property and is available either as a one or a two bedroom property out of high season only.
The Kitchen/diner has all the modern facilities you will need with a dining table that seats 8. The lounge area is furnished in neutral colours with an L shaped sofa and single chair and a 37" flat screen tv with freesat. WIFI is also available throughout the property.
New for Autumn 2011 - Wood burner installed in main lounge
The cottage has its own private terrace with patio furniture, parasol and BBQ overlooks the front garden and is a perfect place to sit and watch the children play football on the lawn or just to enjoy the sunshine and the peace and quiet.
Further details outdoors:
Surrounded by open farmland the front of the property is approached along a private gravelled drive from two directions with extensive lawned gardens and parkland with plenty of parking. It is also within walking distance of a small village with a Michelin star restaurant popular with locals and tourists alike. Booking is recommended, although there are numerous other restaurants to choose from all within 10 minutes of the cottage.
The front garden of about 1ha (approx 2 acres) is mainly laid to lawn, containing a selection of trees including an orchard, it also has a trampoline with plenty of space for a game of rounders or cricket. We have a croquet set available, badminton rackets and net, as well as a rounders bat and ball. Bikes and fishing rods are available to hire for a small fee.
The upper back garden by the house has a pretty water pump feature and is surrounded by fragrant roses and herbs and is a quiet and peaceful area over looking the larger lower back garden. The parkland surrounding the lake of approximately 3 acres has a number of mature trees and shrubs with beautiful views along the valley. There are no busy roads near the property just peaceful county lanes with views from every angle.
