Victoria Cottage (gite)

Home description

South facing cottage bright and airy with original beams and exposed stone walls. A large open plan living room, kitchen and dining area. 3 bedrooms and Bathroom with shower over.

The sitting area has ample seating for six people. There is a television with DVD recorder and CD/radio cassette. UK Free view satellite TV is available.

The cottage has full central heating with a wood burning fire downstairs in the sitting area for ambience (logs provided). Double glazing and excellent insulation make this cottage cool in summer and cosy in winter. There is an extensive garden which leads to a trout stream running into the River Arroux.

The Burgundy / Saone-et-Loire region

The area abounds in historical sites. Julius Caesar wintered in the Celtic stronghold at Bibracte completing his Gallic Wars Commentaries. The European Museum of Celtic Civilisation now stands on the site (a 20 minute drive away). Autun was founded as Augustodunum by the Emperor Augustus and has many impressive Roman remains including a massive amphitheatre, temple, walls and gates.

In the Middle Ages, the Dukes of Burgundy ruled a vast empire from Dijon and the vast Cluny Abbey was at the heart of the Benedictine Monastic movement. Napoleon attended school in Autun. In WWII Burgundy was a centre for The Resistance fighters (Marquis).

Burgundy has a higher number of appellation d’origine controlees (AOCs) than any other French region and La Planche is well placed to explore the vineyards of the Côte d’Or, Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits and the Côte Chalonnaise. The Morvan Regional Park is on our doorstep.

How to get there

By Car (from Calais):
The drive is almost all motorway, French motorways are excellent with regular service stations and picnic sites. Remember they are toll roads (it costs about 50€).

A26 from Calais to Troyes, merges into A5, merges into A31 (follow signs for Dijon / Beaune).

Exit at junction 26 – Le Creusot. Take N80 signed to Le Creusot. At Le Creusot follow signs for Autun (N80). At Marmagne take the D61 to Etang-sur-Arroux. At Etang-sur-Arroux take to D994 signed for St Nizier-sur-Arroux.

La Planche is approximately 5 minutes away (signed, turning on the right).

By Train / Plane:
Eurostar to Paris Gard-du-Nord Taxi (make sure it is an official taxi not a private cab) to Gare-du-Lyon
TGV to Le Creusot / Montchanin (the ticket offices are English speaking)
Hire cars are available, or (by prior arrangement) you call us and we will pick you up.
Plane to Paris (Ryanair to Beauvais or Easyjet to Charles de Gaulle) then train as above; or Lyon.

The kitchen is well equipped providing gas hob and electric oven, fridge with freezer compartment, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave oven, coffee machine, iron and ironing board, kettle and toaster.

The dining table is for six people and a high chair is available if required. All bed linen and towels are provided.

A non-returnable deposit of €120 is payable with each booking.

The balance of the cost will be due 6 weeks prior to the commencement of your stay. The full amount is payable if there is less than 6 weeks between booking and holiday.
