The Burgundy / Saone-et-Loire region

Burgundy is a relatively unknown destination but will not dissappoint whether you require peace and quiet or a more active holiday.
There are many historic sites within easy reach of Joux including Autun which is a ramparted Roman town and Bibract a well known archeaological site.
.At any time of the year, there are lots of places to visit and Burgundy's food and wine are second to none.
Although located in the department of Saone-et-Loire, the medieval city of Dijon, majestic seat of the Dukes of Burgundy, with its famous cathedral and Musee des Beaux Arts is about an hour's drive away. Avalon and Vezelay with its quaint streets are about 45 mins drive and well worth a visit. A little further is Macon with its famous bridge and also the monastic remains of Cluny.
Burgundy summers are usually quite dry and temperatures can get to 30 degrees ; perfect for lazy days at Lac Setton .
Autumn and winter is better for more serious walking or cycling.
Snow at Christmas is quite common and truly delightful

Lyon airport is about 2 hours drive to the south and Geneva airport is about 3 hours. Cheap flights are available to both these airports from the UK.

Hire cars are available at all these destinations.

Autun / Anost area

The hamlet in which the cottage is situated has a small museum and many marked cycle routes radiate from the town square.
In summer there is a music festival details of which can be found on www.anost .com. This is an event not to be missed with a dance off competition.
Just outside the village of Anost is a safe natural pond for swimming with designated area for the young ones.
A short drive away is Lac Setton where there is a safe beach from which you can swim or hire pedalo's, fish or sail your own boat.

How to get there

Calais port or eurotunnel is probably the most convenient though not the nearest. It takes around 6 hours from these or if you took the ferry to Le Havre it would take about 5 hrs 30 mins
From Lyon airport it would take about two hours to get to the house. Another option would be Geneva Airport.

Guestbook

We spent a restful week at the cottage. The weather was good . Everything was clean and tidy and the shower was really good. As ‘resident chef’ can I add that your knives were the best I have ever encountered in rented accommodation; Anne and John

Thank you for a great stay at Joux. House very comfortable .Found the cottage no
trouble.Loved Autun, we thought the shopping was great . Anne from Australiia.

We were the only English in a bar/restaurant full of French - but they were marvellous! Anyway, we had a great time, loved the area and had beautiful sunny days almost all the time (plus lots of morning mist). such a lovely part of France!
Alison and Martin . Belgium

House everything we could wish for. Thank you, we had a relaxing holiday in the sun. Jean and David.
