Home description
Forming a substantial part of a stone-built former farmhouse, this 200 year-old wisteria clad gite is situated 18 km east of Autun, the former capital of France in Roman times. Set amongst wooded countryside with views of rolling hills, the house looks across fields to the turretted towers of the Chateau de Sully.
Recently renovated to a very high standard, yet carefully preserving its unique character with exposed beams throughout, Les Glycines provides a comfortable base for a relaxing holiday close to some of Burgundy's best known vineyards. With three bedrooms and two shower rooms, this spacious gite can easily accommodate three couples or a larger family party and offers private fishing, use of the owners' pool and internet acces.

The Burgundy / Saone-et-Loire region
Burgundy summers are usually quite dry and can be hot ; perfect for lazy days by the pool or a gentle stroll by the river. For more serious walking or cycling, come in autumn or winter and unwind infront of the log fire. At any time of the year, there are lots of places to visit and Burgundy's food and wine are unsurpassed. Although located in the department of Saone-et-Loire, the gite is not far from the vineyards of the Cote d'Or, with the wine centre of Beaune about 30 minutes drive to the east. The medieval city of Dijon, majestic seat of the Dukes of Burgundy, with its famous cathedral and Musee des Beaux Arts is about an hour's drive to the north. Chalon sur Saone, the home of photographer, Niepce, sits graciously on the river about 45 minutes to the south. A little further is Macon with its famous bridge and also the monastic remains of Cluny. To the northwest, the Morvan National Park offers opportunities for long distance walking, pony trekking and boating on the Lac de Settons. There is a fascinating archaeological research centre at the site of the ancient Celtic city of Bibracte.
Autun / Sully le Chateau area
The local village of Sully received its name from its founder, a Roman general who fell in love with the place, like many others since! Nowadays, the Duchess of Magenta welcomes visitors to Sully's imposing chateau and its grounds. In the immediate vicinity, there is plenty of easy walking straight from the gite door. The nearby small town of Epinac caters for most everyday shopping needs and offers friendly cafe/bars and a twice weekly market. The quintessentially French market town of Autun boasts many fine restaurants and tourist attractions, including its Roman walls and splendid amphitheatre, cathedral, museum and military school with its fine mosaic roof. There is a lively shopping centre, twice weekly market and frequent festivals. Of particular note are the sound and light spectacular event in August describing the history of Autun and the traditional sheep and agricultural fair in September. The arts have always figured highly in Burgundy and many sculpture exhibitions and music festivals are held in the area throughout the summer months.
