Home description
The Chateau d'Aumeville-Lestre is a quintessentially French, 18th Century Chateau, near the sea, in beautiful countryside, standing in its own parkland, with avenues of trees stretching to each point of the compass. The fortified towers of a previous medieval chateau still flank the courtyard. There is an ornamental lake, and tall palm trees grow in rose-beds either side of the Chateau's main entrance. The Chateau was turned into apartments some years ago, and we own one of the rather grand ones on the upper ground floor.
The apartment has high ceilings, tall windows and shutters, double doors and a marble fireplace. It was spectacularly decorated by a celebrated English interior designer in the 1990s as his international showcase. We have now owned it for several years; lit it with chandeliers and furnished it with gilt mirrors, original paintings and prints, comfortable beds and Laura Ashley sofas; equipped it with porcelain and cut glass, and put in a handsome, modern kitchen and a sybaritic bathroom. The bathroom, main bedroom and Salon can be entirely candlelit. There are two bedrooms, one a very romantic double bedded room and the other a lovely twin bedded room, with panoramic views across the Bay, on the second floor.

The Normandy / Manche region
The weather in the Peninsula is similar to the Channel Islands, both warmed by the Gulf Stream. Primroses come early, palm trees are grown widely, and fuchsias reach the eaves of the famous Hotel des Fuchsias in nearby St Vaast. Winters are short and sharp but the apartment is centrally heated, and there are always plenty of logs for the fire. Summers are usually balmy and never too hot.
The sea is very close and provides sandy beaches by the mile. Inland it is all lush green valleys, woods and meadows. There is history everywhere from William the Conqueror to the Normandy landings

How to get there
Brittany Ferries have both year round ferry services to Cherbourg, Caen and St Malo from Poole and Portsmouth, and seasonal fast craft services to Cherbourg and Caen. The Chateau is a 30 minute drive from Cherbourg. LD Lines serve Le Havre and you can come via the Channel Islands. The Channel Tunnel is a 4 1/2 hour drive away. You can come by Eurostar via Paris (2 1/4 hours) and Valognes (2 3/4 hours), or you can fly to Caen and Deauville, Rennes and Paris, and then rent a car.
Brittany Ferries have specially low rates if you travel for 5 days or less, which fits well with the 3 or 4 day structure of the Chateau scheme; and we have an arrangement for a further discount, which we pass on at cost. A 24 hour, or even a day trip, to see the Chateau can be arranged for 2 people and a car for about £60, if booked in advance.
