The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region

In 2004 we left the busy city life in the UK to retire in France. We chose the Charente Maritime area because of its warm climate, beautiful countryside and its wonderful coastline. We live in a restored charentaise farmhouse which has been converted into three cottages, one of which is our home.

The front of the property overlooks a small garden with a lawn, shrubs, Mirabelle trees and two magnificent horse-chestnut trees which offer well needed shade in the summer months for sitting or eating under.

The swimming pool is at the rear of the property which is enclosed by a gated wall. Roman steps lead into the shallow end of the pool. Sun loungers and parasols are provided for your relaxation. Further beyond the pool is a lawn with young fruit trees and also an elevated area for the serious sun-bather!

Les Lézards is situated in a very quiet Hamlet surrounded by fields of sunflowers, wheat and maize which makes it an ideal area for country walks and/or cycling. The village of Aulnay is within a short distance offering all facilities including a supermarket, post office, banks, pharmacy, bakers, restaurant, bar, open-air swimming pool, tennis court and Sunday morning market where fresh local produce and gifts can be purchased.

The beautiful market town of St. Jean D'Angely is within 15 minutes drive with many shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants offering French, Italian, Cantonese and Indian cuisine. There is also an indoor Leisure Pool, skate park, mini golf, river activities and go-karting. Wednesday and Saturday mornings are market days.

Le Grand Lézard is an ideal base for many tourist attractions:

Marais Poitevin - Considered to be the most beautiful marsh in France where you can hire a boat and discover the green

watery maze.

Poitiers - The provincial capital of Poitou which still retains its historic atmosphere. North of the city is Futuroscope which

offers the finest array of large cinema screens in Europe – certainly a full day out for all the family.

Limoges - Renowned for its fine porcelain and enamel.

Oradour-sur-Glane - Perhaps the most painful symbol to the French of the German atrocities of the second world war.

Cognac - Several world famous distilleries where you can tour and sample!

Saintes - A miniature piece of Italy set down on the banks of the Charente River with four bell towers, Abbey and

Gallo-Roman Amphitheatre.

Royan - A lively seaside resort with sandy beaches and a wide range of amenities and activities. Many shops and

restaurants and street entertainment. Seafood restaurants by the harbour. Boat and fishing trips.

La Palmyre - 5 miles of sandy beaches on the edge of a forest. The magnificent La Palmyre Zoo is the largest of its kind

in France where visitors can see some 800 animals in a pine forest setting.

Ile d'Oléron - The largest of all the French islands after Corsica. Long sandy beaches, oyster farms and vineyards.

Small villages with shops and restaurants offering excellent seafood.

Rochefort - An ancient naval base. Catch up with the building progress of the 18th century frigate “Hermione”. The Royal

Ropewalk, the Naval Museum and the exotic home of writer Pierre Loti – all well worth a visit.

La Rochelle - A beautiful old sea port offering boat trips to the islands and Fort Bouyard. Countless pavement cafés and

restaurants specialising in seafood. Open air gift stalls and street entertainment along the quay. Several museums and

a wonderful Aquarium – one of the most visited places in the Département.

Ile de Ré - Highly prized destination for French sun worshippers, who bask in its special micro-climate. An island of

vines, salt marshes and oyster beds. Beaches, harbours and small villages. Poitou-Charente's answer to

St.Tropez is St. Martin-en-Ré boasting its circular harbour with seafood restaurants and narrow cobble-stoned,

boutique lined streets.

Here at Les Lézard you can enjoy touring, cycling, walking, sampling the local seafood and wine - not forgetting the local apéritif Pineau de Charente - or simply relaxing by the pool!
