About the home

This gîte has been carefully renovated and recently modernised to a very high standard, offering spacious accommodation for up to four people. Le Gîte du Portail is surprisingly large inside with thick stone walls, making it beautifully cool in summer and very cosy in the winter.

The living room
On the ground floor is a comfortable fully equipped lounge and dining room.
The kitchen
The attractive and practical kitchen with a tiled floor and beamed wooden ceiling offers plenty of storage. A spiral staircase leads to a large upper hallway with access to the bedrooms and the bathrooms.

The double bedroom
Upstairs are two sizeable bedrooms. The main bedroom is approximately 6m x 5m, with a beamed, vaulted ceiling and has a super king-size bed. This room has an en-suite shower room with hand basin and WC. A feature of this bedroom is a stained glass window, hand-crafted locally in Vinax by an artist who has renovated windows of Salisbury Cathedral in England.



The second bedroom has twin beds. Both rooms are very comfortable and benefit from fitted carpets and rugs.

There is a well appointed modern bathroom with a full size bath, separate shower and hair dryer. Ample hot water is always available.

With the option of efficient gas-fired central heating Le Gîte du Portail is a perfect place to stay at any time of the year.

The garden with well
Opposite Le Gîte du Portail is the spacious garden, which enjoys magnificent mature trees offering plenty of shade and extensive views over open fields. Table, chairs, and parasol are provided. This part of Charente Maritime enjoys an abundance of birdlife.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

Charente-Maritime is situated on the southwest coast of France and is part of the larger Poitou-Charantes region. It enjoys long hot summers and very mild winters which are so necessary for the production of fine grapes used to make the wonderful wines and Cognac. It is known locally as the 'western Mediterranean' and enjoys the second highest number of sunshine hours in France (after the Cote D’Azur).

The Aulnay area

The combination of the words "Charente" and "Maritime" help to capture the magic of this department – producing as it does the best from the land with the Cognac grapes, cereal crops and fields of sunflowers – and the best from the ocean with the oysters, mussels and fish. Located with the Atlantic to the west of its 150 mile coastline, the Vendee and Deux-Sevres to the north, the Dordogne to the east and the Gironde to the south, the Charente-Maritime is a magnificent and exceptional part of France.

“What a fabulous place to stay!” The gites are set in a stunning location around the home of Nick & Chania, who are brilliant hosts and made us feel totally at home. The standard and cleanliness of the gites was absolutely superb, with a wonderful communal area where Nick and Chania host a weekly get-together with all guests invited. The pool was heated and, given the hot, sunny weather we had for 13 days of the 14 day stay, we made full use of it! The location is well placed to explore Cognac, Saintes, La Rochelle and surrounding areas and a reasonable (50 mins) drive to Fouras, a lovely seaside town close to Rochefort. Saint Jean-d'Angely is the nearest large town with an amazing market in the centre of the old town, some wonderful architecture and several large supermarkets. Aulnay is the nearest town with a supermarket and a reasonable selection of shops and facilities. Overall, a fabulous holiday!
