The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region
The Poitou-Charentes region is reputed to be one of the sunniest areas of France. There are extensive vineyards providing the grapes that are used in the production of Cognac and the famous local apéritif wine, Pineau des Charentes. Visit Cognac and take the famous Cognac tours.
The coastal area, including the towns of La Rochelle, Rochefort and Royan, is popular for seaside tourism and boating. The coastal islands of Oléron and Ile de Ré are famous for their beaches, extensive cycling tracks and beautiful ports and harbours, where you will find restaurants selling the local speciality of oysters. Some of the other places of interest include:
- Venise verte, "Green Venice": An area of slow moving rivers and channels, woods and fields. Boating and kayaking, angling, rambling and riding are among popular activities here.
- Poitiers: With an attractive old centre, famous for its ancient churches.
- Futuroscope: A future-based theme park, famous for its variety of high-tech cinemas.
- Saintes: With its Roman triumphal arch and amphitheatre and other remains from antiquity.
- Aulnay, part of the Saintonge: A remarkable ensemble of 11th and 12th century romanesque churches, with magnificent carved porches and stonework.
Our house is located on the edge of a small hamlet - Le Breuil - which is the heart of the local farming community. Aulnay is the nearest town - 5 minutes drive away - and it has a large supermarket; restaurants, cafes and bars; a local market selling freshly-grown produce and a very famous 12th century church. Our location boasts some of the most beautiful countryside in France. Take advantage of it by planning some walks or cycle ride, making sure you end up at a bar/restaurant for a long lunch. Travel further afield by car and visit the numerous historic towns dotted throughout the Saintonge area.
Go to the nearby trout lake to catch and cook dinner.
There are four golf courses within reach. The course at Saintes is 30 minutes drive and is situated on the site of an old Roman Aqueduct - putt out on the 3rd green beneath the towering Roman ruin. Other courses are at Cognac and Niort. Or travel a bit further to Royan to play what is known as the Augusta of France, only 75 minutes drive away.
The shoppers in your group must visit the ancient towns of La Rochelle and Saintes. Take a drink by the harbour in La Rochelle or alongside the rambling Charente river in Saintes.
Our favourite restaurants can be found in St Jean D'Angely, just 20 minutes drive away. While you're there visit the medieval dungeon and try to decipher the graffiti of the prisoners, written hundreds of years ago.
