The Tuscany / Massa Carrara Province region

The birthplace of the Renaissance, the olive groves and cypress trees of Tuscany are Italy itself for many visitors. The rolling landscape with its cultivated vineyards and its remnant wildness, is a particularly beautiful and tranquil destination. Nestled within the landscape are some of the treasures of the Renaissance, Siena, Lucca and Pisa, home of one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world.
The Aulla area
Lunigiana is the undiscovered northernmost tip of Tuscany that protrudes into Liguria and Emilia to link the Apennines with the craggy Alpi Apuane, providing a beautiful backdrop to Tuscany’s Mediterranean beaches.
This is an area of outstanding natural beauty dotted with ancient hill-top villages and terraced olive groves. The pace is slow, the food and wine wonderful, and the locals are extremely friendly and welcoming. Lunigiana is still associated with the smell of burning wood and fermenting wine, and is extremely tranquil.
The weather in June, July and August is fairly hot, but during the Spring and Autumn, the days are generally warm and sunny, though cooler at night. September and October are an interesting time to visit, as it is the time of the “vendemmia” or grape harvest. “Porcini” mushrooms are also to be found at this time of year, and the locals will be out collecting them from the woods.
Lunigiana is a paradise for walkers, and is full of natural curiosities, such as the caves near Equi Terme, site of the natural sulphur baths. If you wish to visit the famous cities of Florence, Pisa and Lucca, they are all accessible by train from the local town of Aulla.
Aulla is the main town in the area, from which the Taverone and Aulella valleys radiate, the hillsides of which are covered with chestnut woods and high meadows. At the end of the Taverone valley, the Lagastrello pass marks the route through into Parma Province, the source of the River Taverone and the end of the Crenale mountain ridge. Leading more directly east, from Aulla, the old Lucca road runs along the Aulella valley, through Casola and on into the Parco Alpi Apuane, before turning south along the old pilgrim road to Lucca.
Bordering Lunigiana to the west, past La Spezia, and the famous pretty fishing villages of the Cinque Terre is the province of Liguria, with its sandy beaches and pleasant climate.

Read all the reviews, they are accurate but what they cannot describe or convey is the effect this place can have on you. This was our first visit to Italy and our thoughts about what to expect came from other people's memories and their photographs. Frankly, it was hard to belive that the place described in the reviews could exist. It does! We fell under its spell and, like so many others, we will go back. The advice we were given by Julie before our arrival, the welcome we received and the generosity and help we enjoyed whilst we were there was wonderful and made our holiday. Julie and her house weave a magic that is impossible to resist. Italy and Lunigiania have also made a lasting impression! |

We were a family of 6 who stayed April 2011, a wonderful time to visit this lovely area. Accommodation comfortable a v well equipped and ideal with bedroom and bathroom on ground floor for grandparents, and beds and bathroom upstairs for parents and young children. House was at quiet end of rural village with views of nearby mountains stunning, especially at sunset. Large enclosed garden (great for small children) and upstairs terrace had sun all day. No need to take own tourist books, maps, - there is lots provided for guests. Also plenty of previous visitors recommendations in the visitors' book. We enjoyed trips into the mountains which had excellent roads all the way up. Lucca lovely, especially hiring bikes and riding round the route on top of the castle wall surrounding the city. But eat in the side street restaurants as you will get much quicker service than the main tourist street and at half the price. Fivizzano (20 minutes pleasant drive into the mountains) has much better supermarket than Pallerone. Also in the centre of the town it has a lovely little square complete fountain where it's nice to sit and take a coffee. Julie, the owner, who lives next door couldn't have been more helpful. Thank you Julie for all the goodies on arrival , for all your help and advice. It was a joy to know you and be a part of this little community with our friendly Italian neighbours, albeit for only two weeks. Jo and Peter from Swansea |

Guestbook for La Casetta della Vigna
We enjoyed our stay at La Casetta, a comfortable property located at the northern tip of Tuscany . Close to Aulla, it is ideal for trains going far and wide, as well as more local sights such as the Cinque Terra area and Pisa . Just outside the village of Pallerone, La Casetta is set in quiet farmland with its own fig tree and other little goodies that make a visit so worthwhile. I’m sure that Pallerone has its own history but we opted to visit the more popular destinations as those listed above, plus Lucca, that we went to twice. But, Pallerone should not be ignored if a really good and wholesome fish meal is what you’re after. For 25 Euros we had one of the best meals of our trip, wine included, at "La Teresina" which opens Thursday through Monday.
La Casetta is comfortable with all the amenities you would want, as well as the owner lives close by to make the stay just a bit more enjoyable. Local knowledge is important and we were able to benefit from the information provided in the villa on how things work (there are guides and manuals for non-Europeans) as well as what there is to see locally. The area is full of history and we’re very grateful that we read the books and visited Bagnone, a beautiful village with its castle set on the hill top, and other charming sites. Dennis & Marie Beth Sept 2011
For us, the cottage was a good choice: everything works, the beds are comfortable, and the hot water is there when you need it. The ideal spot for a quiet holiday in the centre of historic and beautiful Italy.
"It’s got it all. This is the real Italy. All the reviews below describe the area and house perfectly and just make us homesick for Pallerone! We spent the months of October, November and early December at La Casetta della Vigna as part of an experiment to see if we could live in Italy. We had never been to this part of Italy before but to say that we have since fallen in love with Lunigiana is an understatement. . The beauty of the area and the local history is so varied. The location of the house is exceptional and the different views of the mountains will stay with us forever (and yes you can see them from the shower) . Good food, good wine and great hospitality by the locals. The local amenities were very good even to the 'ginastica dolce' classes and dancing lessons that we attended on a weekly basis with the locals. The house has so much character and everything we needed for our stay, from hi speed internet access to both Italian and English tv. We cannot thank Julie enough for all her support, advice and friendship, nothing was ever a problem for her. As a result our experiment turned out to be a great success and we cannot wait to return, both to stay at the house again and to buy our own property and start our new life in Lunigiana." Peter & Lynne, Sept 2010
This house was a real find, and when we do self-catering in Northern Tuscany again, we will certainly go back to Julie's cottage. The house itself was very clean and very well-equipped (BBC and internet were a real bonus). Julie was extremely helpful right from the word go, welcoming us with local goodies (including a chilled bottle of Prosecco); she really made us feel at home. So, after a day of sightseeing or just a lazy day at the beach, we looked forward to going back to 'our home in the hills'. The theme 'away from it all' described the property perfectly. While we weren't far from the top attractions of Northern Tuscany, it felt like a real escape, free of tourism and full of tranquillity. Possibly the most striking aspect of this property were the stunning views of the mountains, which we enjoyed most in the spacious and lovingly kept garden in the evenings, barbecuing local produce and drinking local wine. Thank you, Julie, for a most memorable and authentic Italian holiday! R,A & B, Germany, June 2010
We have just returned from 2 weeks at this lovely property. The location is brilliant, and we looked around the whole area. Lerici is a lovely beach area (there is some free areas on this beach too), but as with all things go early. Also Massa was nice but this again was a private beach area, but nice to look around. Fivizzano is the nearest big town with nice shops and a lovely ice cream shop in the centre. Fosdinovo is a nice place with a castle, and if you go into the town area you can see the whole region right down to the sea (I think it was Massa). A car is a necessity to get around and look at the marvellous area. We went to the local bar which had very tasty pizzas and also the local hotel which we had a excellent meal at. The property is well maintained and clean and with two balcony's and a nice garden with BBQ we were spoilt for choice. I would recommend taking mosquito spray as we did get bitten.
Julie the owner showed us the river where we went to swim most days, which was 5 mins walk from the house, and the view of the mountains is stunning.
The property is also close to the supermarket (10 mins walk) and this has just about everything you need, get early there for bread, although Julie did say that the local bread shop in the village would deliver bread on a daily basis.
The train station in Aulla is new and there is lots of parking. We didn't use the trains this holiday though, perhaps in hindsight would have been better as parking in the bigger cities was a nightmare and the traffic very busy, but we managed and had lots of fun!! I would recommend going to Rome/Florence by train if you decide to go definitely.
Everyone was really friendly and made us feel welcome.
Thanks Julie for a lovely two weeks and hopefully see you again soon. (Judi, Wakefield)
"An adventure in Aulla!"
"Our party ranged in ages from 11 to 80! We were hoping to find a place to suit us all... and we did.
The house has 2 bathrooms 2 terraces, and enough room for everyone. It was very clean and very well equipped having everything you could wish for.
The area itself surpassed our expectations. Just the view from the windows and terraces was beautiful with towering mountains on every side.
There is plenty to do in the area. You have access to mountains towns and beaches, which was appreciated by our mixed tastes!
We all liked the town of Sarzana which was quiet out of season and the beach resort of Lerici was a plesant surprise offering a lovely sandy beach and sophisticated town. A short boat trip to Portovenere is well worth doing with its pretty houses and interesting shops.
A trip into the mountains to Fivizzano and its nearby villages is recommended. A car is essential if you wish to do this.
There are however excellent train links from Aulla to Lucca, Florence, Genoa or indeed the Cinque Terre. To take the train negates the problem of parking particulalry in the five towns which are not suitable for motor vehicles.
All in all a most enjoyable time was had in this quiet, undiscovered corner of Tuscany.
And finally...yes, we were caught up in the volanic travel debacle. But Julie (the owner) couldn't have been more helpful. She allowed us to stay on at a minimal cost. She gave us unlimited use of her internet and telephone and provided us with up to date information on the situation. Thank you!
Lindie, John, Joyce and Joe" April 2010
"We have thoroughly enjoyed our third visit to this cottage, which we have found
extremely comfortable, well equipped, and sparkly clean!
The whole family found the house very relaxing to stay in, due to the large
variety of facilities at hand, from cookery appliances and utensils, to bikes in
the canteena, comfy sunbeds and beach towels.
The views are stunning, especially at sunset and very enjoyable whilst out
sunbathing out on the terrace! We found the recent addition of the garden an
added bonus ,and enjoyed many BBQ's and afternoons there!
The owner has provided an abundance of information, that has made our holiday
very enjoyable. She has been able to help us out with so many tasks from
ordering the bread from the bakers to giving indispensable knowlege on local
restaurants, markets and fetes. Her advice on where to eat was enormously
helpful and an added extra that we wouldn't expect.
We would definitely recommend this property to any of our friends or faimily and
can't wait to come back again soon.
The location of the cottage allowed us to enjoy a wide range of activities from
mountain walking and exploring mountain villages, to the cinque terre, the local
swimming pool and the city of Lucca; which was enjoyable for all the family. " Colin, Beth, Hannah & David, Cheshire. Aug 2009
"We have had a great holiday!
La Casetta della Vigna proved to be the ideal base for exploring the coast,
mountains and nearby scenic villages and cities.
The cottage is simply lovely, well-equipped and spacious. All our suppers were
enjoyed on the upper terrace with its brilliant views. We had a couple of days
with less sight-seeing relaxing in the garden with a good book. Thanks for
providing such a choice of holiday literature, including maps and guide books!
The boys loved swimming/floating/playing in the local river; less crowded than
the Mediterranean. We all also enjoyed watching BBC, and having internet was a
great bonus. A big thank you to Julie for her generosity and kindness!" Carina, Steve & family, Sweden, July 09
"We had a very enjoyable two weeks in this lovely house where we had everything
we needed and felt very welcome. The views are beautiful and it was so good to
sit out in the garden on a balmy July evening - or walk up to the local pizzeria
then watch the fireflies in the lane on the way back. Julie, the owner, lives
next door and she was generous and helpful - there's also lots of local info
provided in the house. Pallerone itself is fairly plain but there are loads of lovely places within
easy reach - you can get almost anywhere on the train from Aulla - we went to
Florence(early start!) on the train which made a long day but well worth it. We
drove to Lucca where there are several car parks just outside the city walls.
If you get tired of scenery and ice-cream go to Genoa where there is a fantastic
aquarium and a museum of the sea on the waterfront.
If it's too hot, go to the caves at Equi Terme or the Grotte di Venti, or have a
dip in the river.
I would happily recommend this property to friends and would very much like to
stay there again myself." Bill, Scotland, July 2009.
"A big thanks goes to Julie for her hospitality, making us feel so welcome, and
providing so much information on the local facilities and places to visit.
We had a great time and the apartment was a great base to visit both the seaside
and stunning hilltop towns. It was fantastically clean (lovey fresh linen), the
balcony on the top level was a perfect place to catch some sun, and the Wifi was
a bonus. It was also an ideal location having the river and walks nearby for our dog, and
so refreshing to find easy going dog friendly accommodation. It was also really
handy having the supermarket so close too - which sold loads of yummy Italian
treats at great prices. Loved the fresh Focaccia! And we are now addicted to
Lemoncino, thanks to Julies home-made treat she left for us." Pentins, France. May 2009
We spent 3 wonderful days at La Casetta della Vigna. Six of us could comfortably
fit in the villa which had everything we needed. The view across the nearby
mountains was amazing from the balcony. Very relaxing. Julie (the owner) was
extremely helpful giving us lots of great tips about the local area, including
the best and cheapest restaurants! The villa is also a great base to explore the
Cinque Terre, Lucca and the less-frequented area of Northern Tuscany. Would
definitely go back! Bethany, Australia. April 2009
"The most relaxing week of my life. I've never slept so well and woke up to the sound of musical bells. Near enough to so many places, a real find. I would go back tomorrow if I could!" Hilary Secher, Warks.
"Ideally situated and equipped for a relaxed break off the main tourist drag : mountains and sea within easy travelling distance, restaurants within walking distance - perfect" S Furniss, Stratford
"Thank you for a wonderful stay at La Casetta della Vigna, a lovely cottage ina superb countryside setting, a short walk to local shops and restaurants, a short drive to the market town of Aulla and with stunning coastal villages and mountains within a half hours drive" C Sheppard
"Whether you need a romantic getaway, a family break or just a holiday with friends, this is the place is for you. It has all the facilities you will need and has a good supermarket and restaurants close by. You are also well placed for access to the coast, places like Pisa and within easy reach of the mountains. Its fab and I will definitely be going there again" Andy, Northants
After spending 3 weeks in La Casetta Della Vigna whilst on our summer holiday in August what more can I say the house was spotlessly clean, spacious, fully equipped, with a welcoming feeling of home. There was the most exquisite views of the mountains from the balcony. If you fancied an afternoon of activities there were bikes available or fishing facilities at the house with the river a short stroll across the road. If you wanted a relaxing afternoon on the other hand you could enjoy the spacious surroundings and relax in the garden with a dip in the lake nearby to cool off. Highly recommended and look forward to another visit. Kim Claudio & Family

Two weeks in this lovely house. We were here with our four children and we had
so fun and were so relaxed when the weeks were over. The owner lives next door
and she was so helpful with whatever we needed help with She helped me to find
horseriding and I loved the 3 hours in the mountain on the horse back.
Many Thanks. Catharina, July 08
