The Brittany / Finistere region
Brittany has so much to offer from the coastlines to the cultural cities. Watersports, fishing, diving, sailing and coastline walks intermingled with historic city walks, cathedrals, shops and street cafes. All within short drives of each other. The perfect destination to satisfy a variety of tastes.
There are many other towns and cities nearby, the medieval town of Locronan, the large marina at Morgat and Pont L'Abbe where some of the ladies still wear the traditional dress of Bretagne. Being on the coast means there are many beaches and coastlines to also investigate, many offering surfing, diving, fishing and watersports and a daily boat trip from Audierne visits the island of Ile de Sein.
Audierne area
The old fishing village of Audierne is an undiscovered gem nestling in a secluded bay on the Cap De Raz. Straddling the mouth of the river Goyen, this bustling fishing port sits easily beside a busy yet relaxed yacht marina, with traditional pastel washed houses and hydrangea hedges leading down to the seas edge. With its beautiful sandy coves, washed by the Gulf Stream, Audierne enjoys a favourable climate ideal for all types of activities including golf, walking, cycling, eating out and of course taking advantage of the great water sports and sailing facilities.
Secluded, yet easily accessible, Audierne has been populated since Roman times when it was known as Vindana Portus. At the height of its activity in the 17th century, the port was home to over 200 vessels of all sorts including the famous "Caravelles" which traded as far wide as Newfoundland and Arabia. The decline of the fishing industry was compensated by the rise of genteel tourism at the end of the 19th century. Renoir and Buffet were both notable visitors, the former delighting in painting the Grande Plage de Trescadec.
Today, the busy fishing port and fish market sits comfortably opposite the flourishing marina with its international yacht moorings. Take the time to buy your fish and seafood straight from the boat as the catch is landed. Nothing comes fresher! The quay with its restaurants and bars to cater for every taste is the social heart of Audierne. Explore the maze of small streets that lead off the quay crowded with shops and boutiques and admire the 18th century merchants house. Wander along the front towards the mole to the petite plage and admire the unique iron passerelle or bridge built in 1894 to allow boats to be towed into the harbour using the Halage. Past the mole, lies the stunning sandy beach of Trescadec watched over by its lighthouse. Ideal for children of all ages, it offers a wide vista towards the Pointe du Raz.
The area offers sailing, diving, waterskiing and 3 golf courses in very easy reach. Explore the beautiful countryside by foot or bicycle or on horseback. For the serious shopper, the medieval city of Quimper some 20km down the coast offers an excellent range of shops and restaurants. Audierne also provides a wonderful base to explore the beauty and wilderness of Brittany from the harsh, high cliffs of the north coast to the softer beaches and coves of the south coast. The area is rich in history and culture and stages annual festivals ranging from Celtic music at Quimper cathedral to the famous Tall ships regatta at Douarnenez.
In Audierne the shops are friendly and whilst there is a supermarket should you need it, there are also plenty of family run boulangeries, charcuteries and epiceries where you can buy fresh local ingredients and shop like the locals. Sample the delights of the vibrant food market on Wednesdays and Saturdays or dine in the fabulous restaurants and bars with pavement seating to enjoy the views over the harbour. The commune is proud of its community spirit and goes out of its way to welcome visiters and has a cosmopolitan atmosphere. At the same time it has managed to preserve the charm and authentic feel of this quintessentially Breton fishing village.
