The Brittany region

Brittany is in the North West of France. The cottage is situated in the department (county) called "Finestere", which means the end of the earth. It is the end of the earth only in the sense that it is a penisula, with the English Channel to it's north and the Atlantic to the west and south. The coast line is spectacular with a wide variety of beaches, ports and coves- sandy beaches, cliffs, rocks, sand dunes, pebbles, rock pools. The unspoilt natural environment encourages a range of flora and fauna. There are beautiful coastal paths that border much of this area. The countryside of the interior is equally remarkable with forests, lakes and riversand canals.

Brittany has a thriving musical culture and throughout the summer there are numerous festivals and concerts.

The Celtic origin of the area is visible in the architecture, history and music of the area. The "Fest Noz" (night time festival) or the "Fest Diez" (day festival) are an ideal opportunity to hear traditional Breton music and join in the dancing.

Brittany has many restaurants, bars and excellent places to enjoy the regional delicacy of crepes (pancakes) or drink locally produced cider.

If you are intersted in sporting or outdoor activities then Brittany is the place for you-horse riding, cycling, sailing, canoeing, climbing, walking are just some of the range of things you might like to experience.

Historical towns abound, some dating from the Middle Ages.

The house is situated in rolling countryside, with public footpaths minutes from the cottage that lead through fields and woodland.

The countryside is a mixture of farmland, woodland, hills and vallies. Although the setting is tranquil and private, acess to the dual carriage way that leads to Brest in the West and Rennes (and ultimately Paris) in the East, is minutes away. A ten minute drive leads you to the nearest beaches and within 20 minutes you can choose from long sandy beaches, bustling ports, cliff sheltered pebble beaches, beaches with sand and rock pools, beaches good for surfing.... The coastal paths offer magnificent views over the sea and being in the most westerly department of France the sunsets are often stunning.

The historical port and town of Morlaix is a 15 minute drive; that of Guingamp, as well known for it's premier league football club as its annual Breton Music and Dance Festival, its medieval ramparts or its horse sculptured fountain; Lannion is another lovely estuary town, which has spectacular flower displays in summer and an excellent market (as do the other forementioned towns)

All the near by towns of a large range of shops and restaurants.

There are castles and gardens open to the public as well as special adventure centres for children.
